geez that's all kinds of crazy. first i suspected hackage too, but by the way you explained it, it DOES sound like someone's using your phone line. maybe someone was hella shady and split your phone line outside so they could use it? sounds weird, but my dad split our line inside so we wouldn't have to pay to install lines in each room. similar, just someone might be outside doing it? and like, using your phone for free?
but that wouldn't cause the aol on YOUR computer to say "guest". or the random shut downs you told me about. . . . i don't think.
wish i could help, but i'm as stumped as you are. maybe call the phone company, if anything, to tell them about it?? or "ask"? =/
