I feel like I don't take life seriously enough. I wonder if I feel like I should take life more seriously, but at the moment, it just doesn't really feel right. I hope this nagging feeling isn't signaling a change just yet. I enjoy the stability so much - yet I wonder what could happen if I got impulsive ( Read more... )

One of my housemates dates an au pair from the Czech Republic. She's a sweetheart.

You'd get tired of Sweden. All the meatballs and the Ikea furniture.

Have you ever considered a change of scenery here in the US? Something on the East Coast, maybe? Or Chicago or even Texas?

No. I'm in the only part of the US I particularly enjoy. I also like Seattle, but I've been enjoying the California sun and heat too much. Hence why I'd want to try out the Scandinavian way of life. When I said Sweden, I meant Denmark and Norway and Finland and Switzerland and whoever else I'm leaving out.

And then there's a nagging voice telling me, "there's always Israel."

I've travelled Europe enough that I don't necessarily think you'd like Sweden that much. But Israel...I think that might be a better option. You should talk to my friend homais about it. Although he's in Damascus right now on a study trip, he usually resides in Maryland, just outside the District of Columbia, where I live. We get together sometimes...he's a secular gay Jew with family in Israel.

I can't help but wonder if life in New York wouldn't work for you. But, you probably know better than I. If you're gonna dismiss all of the US outside the bay area, then I say...Israel, that's a good place. Honestly, I think you'd be disillusioned with Europe.

My motivation is a lot different than most people seem to think. I've been to Israel - I doubt I could ever live there, and I'm not interested in making aaliyah.

New York is too urban. In the couple of times I've been to Europe, driving around European countryside has always been so beautiful I've just wanted to move there.

I'm an adventurer, so this all sounds fun to me. Try it, there's nothing to lose!

Somehow I don't see you meshing with the Scandinavians.

and why is that?

The Scandinavian temperament tends to be very blunt and short. Your temperament tends to lean more toward the artistic which is probably why you like the bay area so much. I just think that any prolonged exposure to nothing but the Scandinavian personality would get on your nerves. It would be somewhat similar to me living in Los Angles.

If you could tolerate the Urban lifestyle, I'd think you'd love LA.

The other side of a blunt and short temperament is honesty. They are blunt and short, but they are honest.

Ever thought of trying something off the beaten path, like Luxembourg? :) I've just always wondered what it would be like to live in a country like that. Best of luck making a decision, could be a great adventure. I think Europe is becoming very open to male au pairs, I have a male friend who was one for about a year.
