Narsha’s head rested back against the wall that divided the backstage from the forward, closing her eyes as a sigh fell from her lips, her body finally being able to begin to relax after hiding away from all of her classmates. Sometimes she really hated them; she hated the people that drove her to hide out here in the black box, hated that they made her feel alienated and worthless while hardly trying.

She could ace just about any test, pass any challenge with her magic with elegant finesse, memorize any role from any type of play presented to her and step into another’s shoes in a few hours, but all it took was the awkward silence of her classmates at her approach and her mother forgetting her birthday to send her hiding in scripts and lives of people long dead.
That was her defensive mechanism-loosing herself in her scripts and roles-her lips became dry and chapped as she recited a dozen monologues and thrice as many speeches, different lives and souls flying through her as fast as her lips could move as she took herself elsewhere with the long memorized prose. She was the heartbroken lover, mournful and heartfelt words and emotions taking over her being.

She’s the courageous martyr, her soul filled with a fire that a tyrant king couldn’t extinguish even with a blade.

The dead girl just gone to heaven, still filled with a childlike innocence that lit up her nerves and made her feel weightless and giddy, not realizing the full impact of what had happened.

She is everyone but the forgotten daughter, her life forever construed because of a simple accident of birth.

A highpitched, confused but merry voice suddenly breaks into her thoughts and Narsha’s eyes are ripping open without their usual calmness. She is forced back into her own persona with without her usual grace and it takes her a few heartbeats to process her surroundings again and stare at the girl with messy hair, oddly applied makeup and bright hazel eyes.

“You shouldn’t be hiding in the dark! After school you’re supposed to be happy and at the mall or doing…” The girl, who Narsha now recognized as the much younger daughter of one of her teachers seemed at a loss for words for a moment, “I don’t know somethin’! My mother says that only monsters hide in the dark, and you’re not a monster.”

The thought of scaring the girl away with her disagreement was loud in her mind for a moment but she squashed it in favor of standing up to dust herself off, if nothing else to make sure the now spinning girl didn’t hurt herself or worse yet, destroy the theatre equipment somehow.

Without realizing it, little Ga-in made her forget all about her previous worries, which, as it turned out was one of Ga-in’s talents.

That was how they began to be friends; Ga-in didn’t simply draw Narsha from her shell, rather she took her shell and slammed it repeatedly against a rock.
