APPEARANCE
If one were being kind they would describe Kin’s body type as lithe or willowy, if one did not have a proclivity towards such things they would call her lanky or bony.. The muscle that she has; in her forearms, thighs and calves does not come from vanity or concerns about health but rather necessity for survival and her ‘chosen’ job. Along with effects on her metabolism from experimentation.
A sharply angled jawline, small mouth but mismatched lips and sharp cheekbones means stern is Kin’s default expression. Thin eyebrows, a naturally pale complexion and a less petite nose than her more delicate mother of her means that Kin tends to be more disconcerting than alluring. Lacking in a natural genetic predisposition to feminine curves, and developing callouses early from her chosen weapons along with an overall lack in feminine softness meant seductress would never be Kin’s source of income.
The ignorant would look at the bags under her eyes, the tracts on her arms and between her toes and think her a recovering junkie. But most of the times her hands are steady, her eyes are sharp and she will always test clean. Some things will never go away and are more obvious than others to the outside eye.
Kin usually only wears makeup if she is explicitly trying to hide something or needs it for a job, and prefers her clothes to be quiet and lowkey unless an assignment requires otherwise. Versatile. Normally wears long sleeve shirts and boots, and little to no jewelry, her indulgence is the color purple, what jewelry she is often purple along with a few scarves and hair ties she owns. Although she does pride herself on being able to hide small but effective weapons on her person at all times, and dresses accordingly.
PERSONALITY.
[Flaws are bolded, strengths are underlined]
Kin knows her flaws and strengths, and though she may downplay or overstate them depending on the situation she had no choice but to learn them. Her boss’ put together three man cells with reasoning behind them, and in the one that worked best the longest they all had distinct roles; D was the strong one, tell him who to hit and how and down they go, could also take hits all day. Z was the strategist, good at not getting caught, good at coming up with a plan. Kin? Kin was the cruel one, Kin did what Z told her no matter who got hurt in the process because she didn’t care, vicious and fast--sometimes too good at the former.
Kin is excellent at studying people give her a few minutes to watch and listen, and she’ll bring you back the chinks in their armor and how to tear it off. She’ll say the meanest things without hesitation, with a grin all the while.
See, the problem is Kin was never the leader. She’s hot headed, if you manage to get under her skin, threaten one of Her People or if you show you’re better at something than she is, or just catch her at a bad moment she has the potential to blow a plan sky high. Retreat the call goes out, but Kin is too distracted with trying to win her own fight which she probably would have won already had she not been wasting time taunting them before hand. Kin’s temper tends to come out as pacing and fidgeting snapping, more insults than usual before she eventually physically lashes out.
As a consequence of who she served under in the Yakuza, and her general personality, Kin needs direction. She isn’t the best at finding her own way, she needs someone else to give her a plan, a solid set of steps with little deviation. Like someone who needs the military, Kin requires structure. Lest she crumples. As an unforeseen consequence of this it’s perfectly possible that after some time truly on her own the panic will set in and it will be much easier to sway her to a side just so she will have somethng to latch onto.
Furthermore, Kin is Loyal to the point of toxicity, once you have her loyalty it’s so very hard to lose it. This is great for who she serves and terribly for her. It took her dying for her to run from the Yakuza, and a part of her misses and loves them still, so she has not acted against them though she given the chance.
On the plus side she is Detail oriented, which makes her great at information retrieval, and cover ups of all sorts, and being a tattoo artist.
Still though, she’s judgemental and a bit of an ass about it. Once she comes to a decision about you, whatever it is it’s hard to convince her she’s wrong.
Kin can be affectionate but only with certain people, and she prefers to initiate contact on her own.
Terrible at admitting she’s wrong and it’s like pulling teeth to make her apologize for anything.
Flirting manifests in what looks like bullying, and she greets new people with hostility unless it’s a customer or someone of an obvious higher rank than her that demands respect at first glance.
Kin is possessive and doesn’t like sharing. Even as a child she didn’t share her toys or her parents love very well. If something is her’s, whether it is a person, space, or an object, don’t touch it or she can go from calm to enraged before you can pologize.
Strengths/Merits:
Adaptable
Quick learner
perspicacious
Weaknesses/Flaws:
Prideful
Short tempered, unable to turn down a fight even when she knows she’s being goaded.
Holds grudges, which clashes with her survival instincts
HISTORY.
Ah, where to start with Kin? Good portions of her history are wholly uninteresting and not very unique, truly. Not much to write home about, or differentiate her from others. Maybe it would be best then, to start with her parents? Moral, graceful, passionate people who took their careers and lineage seriously and held their heads high, standing up for what they believed in and trying to set a good example for their daughter.
Oh well that is a bit cliche as well if we’re being honest.
Perhaps her future boss, or dcotor, or even lord depending on how you perceive such things. A man just as wicked in mind as in heart, hungry for immortality, for power and with room for little else in his sight. He was not the first of the Yakuza to do twisted things, but there was a certain tone of cruelty and madness that twisted the bounds of human...Well of being human, that made even the others of his family give him space.
However, Kin was not the first child to lie under his needle, and she was far from the last. So nothing that special there.
So her parents then? Yes, you’re quite right.
Kin’s mother, Asuka Tsuchi, the second oldest of her three siblings, was always a contrary woman. There was a brother above her in age, but he didn’t have quite the head for business that Asuka did, the passion or even the charisma. He was meek, selfish and had issues relating to anyone that was not from a household like his own. They came from a very old Japanese family that had made their fortune both domestically and internationally growing and selling traditional teas, and then gradually everything that goes with it.
By the time she graduated college Asuka had convinced her family that she would be better to carry on their family’s legacy and company once her parents could not, and in a stunning move had been given the role of heir. One of very few second children to take over, and fewer still ranking among the women to properly lead them when there was no death involved. It probably would have been better had she been less ambitious, but you know what they say about wishing in one hand.
Asuka would meet her future husband in New York, who was also from a Proper and Traditional Japanese family, and also the second child. A renowned violinist, Jin was known to be charming, sincere in all things to the point where it was hard not to become friends with him upon first meeting him. They were married within a year, passionate, sweet and utterly in love, no one was surprised when the pregnancy announcement came so fast after the wedding.
Kin was 12 when her grandparents became too ill and her mother took over their company, still keeping her home base in New York. Asuka and Jin were Good People and wanted to run their business and leave a legacy that reflected that. They were idealists, which was allowed to continue while someone else was at the wheel because it was amusing and kind of cute to everyone else. But now? They had to face facts, and the facts were these; The Tsuchi family had been wrapped up in the Yakuza for so long no one was sure where one began and one ended. Asuka had been calling high ranking Yakuza members Aunt and Uncle without realizing it and felt a bit of a fool once it was revealed.
It took less than a year for Asuka’s own family and their ‘business associates’ to decide Asuka was done being humored and softhanded. She was given an ultimatum; toe the company line or step down. Both her and her husband stood fast and so, they were taken care of and the position was given to her elder brother. That was how Kin found out about it all, walking down the stairs because even then she was a late sleeper to find the kitchen a mess and her mother and father on the ground in pools of blood. There was a man standing over them cleaning a metal baseball bat, who watched her reactions carefully.
Were this a hero's tale you were having the privilege of hearing, Kin would have run away, used the speed and agility of youth to get out the door. Would have found the police to server as witness to the man who killed the only family that really loved her. Perhaps she would have become a detective to save other little girls. Were this a tragedy then still she would have ran, but too afraid to run to the police she would have lived on the streets, becoming a thief and who knows what else to survive. Maybe she went to school but probably not, and maybe they didn’t get their hands on her so she stayed pure in that respect but in the end she had no true childhood as she should have.
But this is neither of those stories, instead she took shelter from the trauma of the sight before her behind the man’s legs. He grinned a smile that was only reassuring to her for the simple fact he was alive, and he took her back to his Family.
Kin was not the only teen her age they took in, street kids, runaways, even children of the Yakuza found a place among them. At her age and because her loyalty was question she was considered disposable and not entirely useful, so she was assigned to someone who well--who needed bodies with beating hearts and not much else.
They called him the Snake Doctor. A great deal of brains, money and old blood but very little heart, the man was filled with a hunger for power and immortality. He collected teenagers and even younger for his experiments, and even the worst of the Yakuza preferred not go into his labs. First he tried new techniques, injections and any other means of manipulating their DNA and anatomy on them rather than himself.
Yes, a great deal of them had a component of Venom, from snakes or otherwise. An odd mix of new world science and technology mixed with almost pagan medicine. His Children, when they survived, looked like junkies to the ignorant eye; track marks on their arms and between their toes, sometimes on their necks or even in their eyes, the tendency to have markedly higher or lower temperature than expected, with the added bonus of sometimes coming out enhanced.
Gradually, as his kids proved to be loyal to the Yakuza has a whole and sometimes unhealthily loyal to him they were put to work when not on his table. It started small as these things are known to do; go retrieve this money or object, spy casually on this business or police, steal this relatively lowly guarded object. Then as they grew older, more skilled and less liable to break it became worse--find this person trying to start a gang in our territory and make him come under our umbrella or story, get protection money from this business and only restrain yourself some, steal from this highly guarded place, threaten a police detective or congressman’s family to show them their place.
Ah but they got out of hand so quickly for children. The Doctor’s kids were not the first ones growing up in the Yakuza by no means, that tradition dated back over a hundred years, but these lost control so much easier than anyone else. It was like what he did brought out their baser instincts, enhanced their worst qualities.
They were told to just scare people, or just clear out a rival hideout, and instead there were bodies. They became skilled at cleanup, at framing someone else or at making it look like nothing happened at all.
Kin herself had a reputation, the other kids her age--both the Doctor’s and non-- and even those just a few ranks above her started calling her Orochii, which the non-Japanese speakers including those not in the Yakuza started shortening to just ‘Ro. It translated, roughly to an 8 headed, 8 tailed giant serpent. She thought it was just because of who she served, and it was partially, but moreso it was because of the venomous words she dripped and the speed in which she moved.
Kin was glad her abilities were relatively harmless--enhanced senses alone. Running around in the areas they frequented of New York with as strong senses as a dog wasn’t the greatest, or being able to see every bit of trash floating down the hudson, but she would take that over one of the things the other kids got. If it was too useful the Doctor took you away and you never came back. So she learned to repress everything she heard, smelled and saw to keep what she had left of her rational mind.
When she was seventeen they took her and some of the others off street duty to put others who were more in control of themselves on it. They tried to find roles for the kids, other ways to be useful. For Kin, her attention to detail, photographic memory, and ability to listen to her Betters without giving lip was valued by one of the most prominent tattoo artists among them and she was given an apprenticeship. Through this she developed a love for drawing and art, and by the time she was twenty-two she was taking clients of her own--usually only within the Family of course.
Then things changed(or better yet, things went to shit) when The Doctor received a shipment of what were supposedly magical items, Kin found herself submerged in some sort of warm sparking goo again and again so the point where she pleaded with him to find out what she did wrong. He smiled and told her how lucky she was before pushing her back in. That night she was sent to her room and told her she was not too leave nor have any visitors.
Those who would call her sister, who she had taken hits for and lives for, who she called hers were having none of that. They thought the Doctor had reached his breaking point. Finally gone off his rocker. It was no challenge for them to sneak into her room and tell her to pack, and she was torn because the Yakuza were all she had known for ten years and and and--
”Kin are you batshit?!” They used her real name because the higher ups only called her girl, the Doctor called her my child or baby doll and everyone else called her some variation of Orochii. They did it to get under her skin this time.
Kin lashed out at him with a fist but he knew the way she moved and how she would react, grabbing her arm in time to twist it around and hold her against the wall even as she kicked out against him in a fruitless struggle. The others were muttering, worried about getting caught, wondering if she was too far from them to bring back, “So what if we die? What did you expect all these years? We are canon fodder! Expendable! That’s how it’s always been, we were never going to get promoted and live to a ripe old age!”
She twisted against him even as he tightened his old until she threw herself down to the ground with such force her arm was pulled out of it’s socket from his grip and her skull including her nose smashed to the floor. It could have been better executed, but he knew her too well and knew how to hold her until she had no choice but to hurt herself. He just didn't think he would, well clearly he was fucking wrong.
They stepped back, because before them her nose was knitting itself back together and the cut on her cheekbone was healing. There wasn’t much time for anything else before men poured in, their Master among them. He was grinning like they had never seen him before and Kin was hauled to her feet.
That was the last they saw of her, The Doctor caressed her face and whispered sweet words as she was loaded up into a private jet. Kin had never felt so loved as she did during those hours on the flight to a city he only called The Capitol. He said she was so special, that this could have only worked on her alone and that there was a man with more magic than Kin could dream of in this city than anything she could dream. This man would make it so she would live forever within her master because she had done so good for him.
The next few weeks were characterized by brief flashes of consciousness with a grinning man she had never seen above her, with lightheadedness mixed with searing pain. Later on she will come to believe they were draining her blood and possibly taking out pieces of her bones.
All she knows for sure is that she wakes up gasping two weeks after she left New York in a very small box under a great many other boxes in a warehouse that she loses her nails trying to get out of, a day of her life and gets a wonderful new phobia in the process. She runs. She does not call her friends, nor her aunts and uncles who have long disowned her, she does not pass go or collect 200$.
That was three months ago, she showed up in Repose at the tattoo parlour looking for work, rented a motel room with the money she stole along the way. It took some convincing, a lot of drawing and dismantling and naming of equipment like she would a pistol to prove she could do what she had been studying for years since she had no references and no pictures but they took her.
She’s stayed low, gave herself bangs and put fire red streaks in her inky black hair, only went by Orochii in the hopes it would help her friends call her without the higher ups finding her. Gave up Tsuchi, and told as few people about Kin as possible. She has committed no crimes, and though she was recognized once by some Suit from the government in the Capital and offered some sort of bargain to turn evidence of the Yakuza she refused and went to ground, so she has hardly gone anywhere but home and work to avoid further recognition.
And that, as they say, is where our story begins.
