PERSONALITY.
Personality:
Raven is a kinetic learner, which translates to how do I know the stove is really hot unless I touch it in this instance, always been touchy. Wants to know how things work and how they feel, she remembers things with all her senses--how a person smells, the texture of their skin and hair, the sound of their voice. When she’s not on a job she also has trouble respecting personal spaces.
Speaking of things that get her in trouble, the worst thing to tell Raven is don’t; don’t touch that thing, don’t take that thing, don’t bother that person, don’t ask those questions. That and I bet you can’t are the two phrases guaranteed to make her interested in something she didn’t care about before.
There are grifters in her family that are very good at what they do, but Raven will never have their skills. They did, however, teach her a few things. Including the fine art of talking for hours without saying anything, and how to step back and blend into a crowd and disappear quickly.
Her ability to adapt quickly, landing like a cat and thinking on her feet is all her own, though her family certainly fostered it. The LeBeau’s started stealing because they couldn’t eat any other way, and survival at any cost isn’t a lesson they have ever forgotten.
Still, she wasn’t her grandfather’s ideal protege. Raven has issues maintaining relationships outside of her family both romantic and platonic. Things get hard, things get stressful or make her feel too many things and she hits the road. It’s part of the reason she’s stuck to BB, just to prove that she can keep a friend around. Though each job she has is taken seriously she likes to play, making some things into games and laughing when most people wouldn’t. This was a constant source of frustration for her teachers.
Her work tools are organized and well maintained, but the rest of her life isn’t. Her living spaces and vehicles are always a mess, clothes scattered everywhere and a fridge possibly (probably) stocked with expiring food. She gets real bad tunnel vision, gets so caught up in researching a job that she’ll forget to eat and sleep, mainlines coffee like a university student stressing for finals.
Though she has no issues standing up for herself she’s shite at confrontation. Lay hands on her and her early, family taught self-defense lessons kick in and she’ll hit you enough to get your feet out from under you and run away. Too nosy for her own good, with a memory that helps her retain stuff she shouldn’t and a love of poking metaphorical beehives means she’s made more than one person mad but when they confront her she’s more likely to dodge questions and bail than push back.
Raven has trouble with empathy, trouble understanding why people are upset and even sometimes why they are happy. She still helps people who are suffering if given the opportunity, and has enough of an ethical code not to steal from people who are in a bad way. Her love of shiny things and dislike of stagnation and staying still has never faded, and with that comes a love of change, of shaking things up just to see what will happen. This doesn’t always end well for other people, but that’s a consequence she still hasn’t quite wrapped her head around.
A bit of a hoarder, she collects private trophies from each job, things that look innocuous and are lacking in value to anyone but her. She also tends to steal from people around her when she’s in a crowd without even realizing it, especially when she’s nervous. It’s something she has to consciously stop herself from doing. As a side effect, perhaps, from her tendency to go through relationships, she tends to steal at least one thing from her partners--friends or otherwise, and won’t even give it back.
Is known for dying her hair outrageous colors, and bouncing from wearing no makeup for a week to wearing all of the makeup. Sometimes her idea of blending in and being inconspicuous is actually “If I dress outlandishly enough people will be too distracted to think anything else about me”
HISTORY.
According to her great uncle, who was chain smoking in the front yard while his niece gave birth inside, she was named Raven because her mother wanted to honor both their Cherokee heritage and their family’s love of nature based names. Her mother says it was because as she lie in the bed screaming a raven perched on the windowsill, calm as could be, and she took it as a sign from her grandmother whose name had been Crow about her daughter. While of course, her father still stands by the assertion that the pain made his wife latch onto the nearest animal she saw for a name.
All that is to say that she was born into a family of slick talkers who are as loyal and loving as they are bull headed. They are an expansive bunch, it seems every woman Raven is related to could hold the nickname ‘fertile myrtle’ with little effort. She has two older siblings and two younger and more cousins than you could shake a stick at, their family also has a tendency of adopting close friends as honorary members, Raven has Aunts and Uncles she doesn’t share blood with but would still take a bullet for.
The LeBeau Family, based out of Louisiana but clustered elsewhere in the US and in a few other countries as well, has a bit of a reputation in certain circles. It’s one they’ve earned, are aware of, and are right smug bastards about it at times. You see, they are thieves. Thieves, grifters, con-artists, hackers, a few demolitions experts that even the military was made wary of by the gleams in their eyes.
Crime wasn’t mandatory, but you do what you know and water follows the same path down the mountain over time, and other cliche phrases that means you usually end up following tradition intentionally or otherwise. Raven may be her parents child but her grandfather doted on her, more so when at eight she started hoarding any jewelry that was in her reach, even if ‘reach’ was defined as a short climb away on top of a precarious dresser. Raven didn’t want to wear the jewelry really, she just wanted to have it, because it was pretty and she thought it was fun to take things.
Nimble, quiet and displaying an early gift for eidetic memory Raven started mentoring under her grandfather at the age of eleven. He was the most renowned thief in Louisiana even at his age, and though no one took her on official jobs that early she flourished at training exercises given to her. It was all fun and games to her and she was competitive even then. Going to the zoo for her thirteenth birthday and competing with her cousin to see who could pick up the most wallets earned her the nickname Magpie from her grandfather, or Mags, the former would one day be her alias clients would use to hire her and the latter what family referred to her during Jobs.
Raven started Working in the family Business the year she turned fifteen, but still managed to graduate high school with wholly unremarkable grades in everything but Photography--something she discovered a surprising passion for as an extracurricular with the added bonus of using it on jobs. She had a talent for mathematics, but didn’t like doing the work if it didn’t have practical applications, or there wasn’t a competition involved.
Restless, eager to see the world and with sticky fingers itching for a challenge she set off from home after she graduated high school, her parents had bought her a car as a reward for sticking with school. A little compact thing, good on gas and purposefully nothing impressive from the outside, but with a whole array of helpful hidden compartments.
Magpie made a name for herself, with the quick efficiency of her family even if she didn’t advertise her last name--wanting to be successful through her own work instead of theirs. She didn’t turn down jobs because they were going to be difficult, or high risk, she never changed her asking price after it was agreed on and she didn’t ask extra questions. Along the way she met Chris, a man much more subdued than herself whose smile reminded her of her Aunt who specialized in information and knew entirely too much of it. She did a few jobs for him, and he had the eerie ability to know when she was in his city even when she had just arrived. But he paid well and never gave her boring jobs, so she didn’t question it too much.
When she was just twenty-two a client of her’s got greedy and she got greedy, or maybe some combination of the two. Sure, she could steal papers from a famous straight line judge’s house, sounds fun. But the woman, Ma’at was nearly as silent as The Magpie and caught her as she was leaving. She spent nearly a year being chased around the South by a dogged detective on her trail before hightailing her ass up north.
In DC (the home of thieves in suits) she met BB when she took on a side job of Photography for a questionable news magazine or three. Raven didn’t write many articles herself, never one to focus long on the written word when actions were better. A kinetic learner, always had been. But BB was better with those, they made a good team and were almost equally bad influences on each other. Her family trusted her judgement on who to tell about her and her family’s...Professions, but she was tentative about it in the wake of being in a Judge’s crosshairs.
So she did a few odd jobs to pay the bills so none of her new friends would wonder how she was eating and paying rent, BB saw her do a little parkour here and there when she was feeling particularly ornery and she may have broken into her friend’s car that one time when she locked herself out. Oh, and her apartment the once when BB had brought home someone questionable from the bar and hadn’t texted in the morning. But still. Beset not take the risk of her friend getting dragged down with her if something happened.
When BB moved to California Raven stayed behind for a few months and took on another risky job that she probably shouldn’t have involving a high profile senator. She wasn’t caught, but it was a near thing, and decided to stalk her friend across the country because why not and all.

Future Plans:
Raven will shake things up, and likely get in over her head with people and events she probably shouldn’t. It will be fun to see how her flighty nature will contrast with the other mischievous deities, especially because she’s the least smooth with people as any of them. She’s still coming into her own in some ways, so it’ll be interesting to see how the other deities affect her development.
Transformation:
Raven has often symbolized change and a bit of chaos, it is fitting then that as Raven’s transformation begins her natural tendency to go after things she shouldn’t will intensify becoming more of a compulsion than a habit. She’ll also be able to transform into an actual Raven, it’ll start when she’s startled or nervous and her thievery and hoarding tendencies will become worse in that state until she’s learned to control it.
Ability/Powers:Illusion; from getting into things she shouldn’t, into places she shouldn’t, getting out of tight spots, and hiding things she shouldn’t have Raven’s ability of illusion will come in handy. Like Raven herself it is a thing that is essentially harmless until the wind shifts and the ability is honed and used just right, although usually it is the flashy sort of temporary mischief. She will be able to give the illusion of a changed appearance, hide things and make projections that are usually used as a distraction.
