So, back from Serenity.
I repeat, wow.
I'm still in a little bit of a daze, so this might be a rather incoherent review. I can't remember the last movie that's left me like this actually.
That was one fucking awesome movie and I am so happy I ddin't read spoilers. So happy.
WASH! I sort of knew it was coming. I read a fic (which didn't have spoiler warnings - but that's by the by) which kind of vaguely hinted that he might not survive but I was still shocked when it happened. It was such a Joss moment but wow did it work. At the end scenes, my eyes were just fixed on those dinosaurs. The dinosaurs! *sniff* He will be greatly missed.
And Zoe, oh Zoe. Words fail me. They didn't really build up her and Wash's relationship in the movie, but - just, yeah. Oh how I felt for Zoe.
From the moment that happened I was so there. I was holding my knees and so tense because you ddin't know where it was going to go next, or who was next.
My stomach just dropped when Simon was shot and then his 'goodbye' scene with River. I cried, I admit it. I was so happy he made it through. But, Wash and Book. He deserved more but it wasn't going to happen. Just, yeah, love him. Love them both. *sniff*
Love River. I mean, how can you not? She didn't seem quite as ... abstract in her craziness as she did on the show, but I understand why they did that. There had to be some sacrifices to mass market appeal and that was a very small price to pay. She still kicked all sorts of ass.
Mal. Mal. Mal <3! They dailed up his animosity with Simon a bit at the start, but damn, by the end, he was as wonderful as ever. Him picking up River, all his scenes with River. His scenes with Zoe.
Even Jayne and Inara, who never were my favourites, were great. 'Do you want to captain this ship?' 'Yes!'
I really liked the Mal/Inara moments too and the ambiguous ending was lovely.
Simon and Kaylee got their moment, and I was so happy they did. They're just so cute, and Kaylee's reaction when they were holed up in the bunker. 'Oh to hell with this, I'm living.' So much love. So much. And that kiss in the engine room at end? Hot as hell. *ahem*
The ending with River and Mal's speech was just the most gorgeous thing. Beautiful.
Shallow: Such a beautiful, beautiful cast. Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres (in the dress at the end), Sean Maher (the black coat, the coat), Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, hell, all of them. So, so gorgeous.
Joss. Everyone involved in the movie. I damn salute them. It was great. I really hope the series gets another shot, or another movie, or anything - but I'm not holding up much hope. The movie brought back the FOX frustration all over again.
However, I was happy to hear from someone I went with who hadn't seen the series that it did work well as a stand-alone because I wasn't sure while watching how well it would.
I'm going to see it again. Oh yes. Perhaps many times.
We stayed till the end of the credits, and so did about a quarter of the theatre. Ah, geeks. <3!
After typing this most of the daze has gone but, just ... wow.
