Are damsels like the canaries of fish? They just die easily and are a good indicator that something is wrong in the environment?

But I'm confused... does this mean they weren't dead after all? Just almost dead?

I like the names - dopey, happy, pissy, and grumpy. So cute :)

Not really - they're just really hearty fish, so they can withstand like severe temperature changes, and they can live in water that isn't "right" yet...unlike the "regular" salt water fish that would just die if the PH balance wasn't right or there wasn't enough bacteria or whatever. Anyway, you put the damsels in there for like a week to 10 days to spike the ammonia levels, and then the water will go from spike in ammonia to spike in Nitrite levels to a spike in Nitrate levels...it's really confusing but not really :) Anyway, so the damsels will basically get your water "ready" for the regular salt water fish ( ... )
