When It Rains [1/?] | Kyuhyun, Sungmin, Donghae, Hyukjae(Eunhyuk) | Chaptered, angst, romance | PG-13 (for this chapter)
{ On the first day, Cho Kyuhyun is pretty weird. }
*
Cho Kyuhyun.
“Who the hell are you?” The girl frowns. Kyuhyun looks at her face with a disgusted expression. The rain water that sprinkles onto his hair makes him hiss. The girl fists her yellow handbag’s holder, face freaked out a bit with Kyuhyun’s unexpected question. “It’s me, Seohyun. Were you waiting for someone else, oppa?”
“No I was not. Hmm, you don't look as gorgeous like he fucking boasted before.”
Almost crying, Seohyun purses her lips and asks a question to him with a voice not louder than what a mouse would sound;
“He, who?” chuckles. Kyuhyun turns and walks away.
“Duh, you know. That cheerful little brat who keeps a plastered smile on his fucking face whenever it is bright?”
And Seohyun is still giving him that same look, confused. Annoyed, he stops and turns back to face the girl.
“That Cho Kyuhyun. You know, the other me?”
-
“So the moment the rain stopped, I figured a red left-hand mark on my face, and damn it stings.” Donghae hands him a bag of ice and pulls out the chair next to him. Sitting down, he puts his chin onto his left palm and rocks his head.
“It’s raining non-stop nowadays, man. You’re such in a big fucking trouble.” Kyuhyun hisses. Donghae doesn't need to tell him that. He understands about it perfectly.
“I know. I don't think I’m going to have any mate around this time.” Chuckles. Donghae gives him a weird did-someone-just-fucked-you look, and Kyuhyun laughs even loudly. “Now, look. I know you’re an animal, but make sure you’re not going to get yourself killed just because you want to find a mate. Man you would never know what’s up in those girls’ sleeves nowadays I tell you.”
“Oh man you sounds like an old geezer, dude. Stop babbling or you yourself won't get a girl.” He gets a smack on the shoulder for that. “I can't play with you for long, got to check up the kitchen. That new kid, Lee Hyukjae is such a mess I tell you. I leave him for a minute and everything will go wrong. Don't be surprised if one day you see a fucking cup flying over your fucking head.”
“Then take his luggage and throw him out! It’s not a big problem, isn’t it?”
“I can't. His brother begged me to give him a work and he was my senior in high school; I mean the brother. So yeah, it’s how people pull strings to get what they want.” A skinny kid comes out from the kitchen dressed as how a barista should look like with two broken cups in his hands. Black powders, Kyuhyun assumes as grinded coffee beans that did not managed to get into the cups is all over his apron and some on his cheeks. And he is trying hard to hold his tears.
“Boss...”
“See, I told you. Yes, yes! Just throw those damn cups and go back into the kitchen! I’ll be there in a minute, but make sure--” but before he finish his words, the thunders clasp, and the rain starts its course again. He quickly looks at Kyuhyun who is now sitting on the chair with his head down.
“Damn it you fags. So fucking noisy when there’s a customer here?? Yah Lee Donghae, is this how you run your coffee house? And what’s with this cry-baby dumbshit here? Lost your momma, kiddo?” he stands from his seat and roughly rubs his hands on both of Hyukjae’s cheeks. His left eye brow raises and Hyukjae looks even more scared than before that he drops the cups in his hand unintentionally and spills the remaining black coffee inside them onto Kyuhyun’s white sneakers.
“Why, you--” he lifts his right hand up, ready to slaps Hyukjae hard when someone hold his hand. And he is sure that someone is so not Lee Donghae because Donghae is taking the scared new worker away from the furious Cho Kyuhyun.
“You don't really have to be that hard on some kid, do you?”
A small man, whose height is only around Kyuhyun’s shoulder is wearing a brown sweater with hoody; drenched with rain water from top to bottom. When he moves, everyone can hear the squeaking sounds coming from his black shiny shoes. His huge, doe eyes are brownish; and a soft yet stern stare is piercing out from them. His cupid bow is well-shaped, and Kyuhyun cannot help but to glare at the lips.
“He’s already trembling, can't you be more considerate?” he let go Kyuhyun’s arm and pushes his hoody to the back of his head. Water is dripping from his jet black hair; tied at the back and a little wavy at the front.
“You’re disturbing other customers with your drama, so would you mind to be seated back in your place, mister?” he then walks away from the dumbfounded Kyuhyun and takes a seat in the corner of the coffee house near the entrance.
“That’s...” Donghae speaks after he managed to calm down the scared Lee Hyukjae and put him back into the kitchen. Kyuhyun listens.
“...my favourite customer, Lee Sungmin.”
And if he is not mistaken, he can see rainbows coming out from Lee Donghae’s eyes when he speaks.
-
Lee Sungmin.
The rain stops, and Lee Sungmin sighs. He wishes for the rain to never stop, so that the coldness that he likes will linger around him for a longer time, and he can use it as a reason of why he stays longer in the coffee shop. He runs his finger alongside the edge of the white coffee cup on the table. The dark-coloured drink is now occupying half of the cup, but the warmth of it is still filling the whole container.
His eyes skim all over the coffee house he is in. He loves the place. When he was looking for inspiration on his novel two years ago, his feet helplessly walked into this two-storey coffee house at the end of the road near his house. That was the first time he ever entered a coffee house like this. And that was the first time he met Donghae.
Lee Donghae is nice. He is gentle, and he is adorably friendly. He makes delicious muffins and desserts, and on top of that, he is a good-looking man, too. Sungmin can still remember what clothes that Donghae wore on the first day they met. It was a maroon turtle neck shirt with a pair of black Levi’s. His hair was longer than today; only about an inch above his shoulder, and he was wearing a glasses. He can still taste the famous parfait that Donghae made for him that day; now that parfait is one of the main attractions to this coffee house, and Sungmin is glad to announce that he was the first to taste the frozen dessert.
Lee Donghae is a good listener. He listened to Sungmin that day about how he was having a writer’s block when he was supposed to hand in the final draft of his story in two days or so. He listened to how Sungmin liked the way other writers expressed their feelings in their writings and how he was not able to do that. How he never thought himself as a good writer even after he published three books since he started writing at the age of seventeen.
But then, with a gentle smile and a lovely chuckle, Lee Donghae said something that changed his opinion on himself; forever.
“People are always a hypocrite to themselves. They said they’re not good enough when others compliment their works, but then they made awesome discoveries every day. It won't kill you to be honest and pamper yourself sometimes. Ideas come when people are paying attention to what they are working at, not at the attention of the others on what they are working at. Comparing is a good way to improve yourself, but too much comparing will make you sad, don't you think?”
So he stopped comparing, and the moment he handed his final draft, he finally understood what Donghae meant.
It was simple. He just wanted Sungmin to be confident with himself.
-
The moment he stands up and about to leave the coffee house, Donghae is waiting for him at the counter (he doesn't know why, but watching Donghae alone is somehow breathtaking). There is the guy who was mad at the new barista earlier, sleeping soundly on the long couch behind the counter. Sungmin stares at the tall man and sighs. Donghae who is counting the change at the moment chuckles without looking at Sungmin when he heard the sigh.
“Don't worry, he’s not a dangerous person.” He hands back the change into Sungmin’s hand, and smiles. “I’m not worried, I’m just pissed. He’s not even the owner of this coffee shop, then why he acted like a superior?”
“Uh, the truth is, he is the real owner of this coffee house. He owns 70% the share.” Sungmin eyes are wide open, and he looks at the sleeping young man once again. He doesn't look so scary when he asleep, so Sungmin wonders if he is only scary when he is mad. But
then, as if Donghae can read his mind, he explains.
“He’s my best friend, Cho Kyuhyun. He’s an interior designer for restaurants and diners. Well he studied law before but then...uh...”
“Hey I need to go back to my office, the kids are calling me back for a meeting.” Rubbing his eyes, the tall guy stands up and fixes his shirt, before he walks past Sungmin who is still watching him in disbelief. But after a few steps, he stops, and Sungmin jolts. As he turns around, Sungmin feels as if the Cho Kyuhyun in front of him is a new person that comes out after a sleep. he is smiling, his hand is holding a box of chocolate muffins, and he looks like a naturally cheerful man.
“Thanks for the muffins, dude. I’ll come back later tonight so bake more for me. Oh and you mister, you should try this too. It’s superbly delicious.” Pointing at Sungmin after doing the same to the muffins with an innocent face.
“What the hell was that??” is Sungmin’s first phrase after Kyuhyun walks out from the coffee house, feeling nothing but extremely happy that the day is not raining anymore.
