In My Arms Once Again | KyuMin | Romance, angst, tragedy | PG-13

The time dimension never failed to amaze me.

*

25th October.

The small man was smiling. In his arms, two chocolate paper bags, filled with all kinds of dishes waiting for him to cook them. “Bread, cheese, ah~! The balloons! I forgot the balloons!”

He knocked at the security kiosk’s door, asking the guard that was available at that time to look for his stuff first before he ran with small steps back towards his car. Disarming the alarm, he then opens the back door and reached for the plastic bag that contain what he missed earlier.

“Found ya.” And then he smiled, as if the balloons that were still flat in his hands were something precious.

As he went back towards the security kiosk, he was so busy counting everything that he needs to prepare for that day, that he accidentally bumped into a walking pedestrian.

“Ah~! Sorry!” he bowed and quickly continued his walk towards his destination. He didn’t even took the time to hear the person’s “it’s okay, Sungmin.”

“Are you having a feast today? That’s a lot of food, Mr. Lee.” He gave his radiant smile, and took the bags from the guard’s hands, nodding his head.

“It’s my anniversary with my lover today. I’m giving him a surprise.”

The middle-aged man then laughed and bid him farewell, as he bowed and make his way towards the elevator. He then pushed the blurry number 11 on the elevator’s wall, and waited for the door to slide close. A few seconds later, he took out his phone after a lot of effort of making sure that the bags in his hands didn’t fall, and dialled the first number that popped out once he scroll down the contact list.

“He really takes a lot of time to answer his phone, this brat.” He mumbled. Still waiting for the end to answer, he hummed to himself a lullaby.

“Hello?” a low voice finally answered his call. He wondered what’s wrong this time, listening to the unenergetic voice of his lover.

“Hello? Kyuhyun-ah?”

“Su - Sungmin?”

“Yeah?” silence. Kyuhyun was breathing rapidly over there, he could hear it.

“Kyuhyun-ah, are you sick?”

“Is that really you?”

He lifted his left eyebrow, couldn’t believe the question that his lover’s asked him. “Yah~ are you drunk? Of course it’s me! Don’t tell me you forgot the date today?”

“No - no. I’m not. Where... where are you now?” he could hear his lover’s voice shaking at the end of the line, that he asked him again what’s wrong, but Kyuhyun didn’t answer that.

“Hmm... I’m in the elevator, on my way home. I’ve got a lot of stuff in my hands right now, so I can’t really chat with you right now. Just don’t forget to come okay?”

“O - okay.”

“Sarang-hae.” Click. He pressed the red button. He then leaned his head to the right, trying to figure out why his boyfriend was acting weird today.

“Ah, once he’s here, I’ll cheer him up.”

-

The plain room before now turned into a pinkish palace. He tiptoed as he was trying to stamp the balloons that he had filled with his breath before onto the ceiling. After he finished the last touch on the ceiling, he realised that there were still pink and white balloons all over his apartment floor.

“Shit, I make it too much.” He wanted to put the balloons more on the ceiling, when finally he got lazy and decided to just let the pink and filled-with-air rubber to float around on the floor. “That would make such a dramatic impression for him.” He giggled.

Later, he took out the cream cake that he bought earlier, and put the candles, shaped ‘I LOVE U’ onto it. Adoring the cake too much, he just couldn’t help himself from taking a strawberry on the cake off its place, and put it in his mouth.

“Yummy... sorry for the slight mess up, Kyu~”

And the phone rang. Rushing through the sea of balloons, he hastily picked it up, only to hear Kyuhyun’s furious voice.

“Sungmin-ah!! Get out from there, now!!”

“Kyuhyun? What’s wrong?” he never heard Kyuhyun sound like this before.

“I’ll tell you later! Just get out from there, now!!”

“Kyu~”

Ding dong! The doorbell rang twice. Sungmin glanced at his wall clock. It’s 4 pm.

“Kyuhyun-ah, are you trying to trick me?”

“No I’m not! Just~ did... did the doorbell rang?”

“Aw~ this is so cute Kyu~ I’ll let you in.”

But Kyuhyun was still shouting, telling him not to open the door when he hung up.

“He’s sure is filled with enthusiasm when he’s pulling people’s leg, I tell ya.”

Running with a smile on his face, Sungmin finally grabbed the doorknob, and was about to pulled the door open, when; this time, his handphone rang.

Kyuhyun’s name was on it.

-

26th October.

His fingers were wrapped with the small, silver lining of the bracelet in his hands. ‘It should be on Sungmin’s wrist today’, he thought.
“Sungmin...” and his phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Hello? Kyuhyun-ah?”

“Su - Sungmin?”

“Yeah?” silence. Kyuhyun was really sure that it was Sungmin that called him. He just couldn’t help but stunned by the voice that greeted his ears.

“Kyuhyun-ah, are you sick?” he didn’t answer the question, but asked Sungmin back.

“Is that really you?”

He could hear his boyfriend’s voice sighing at the end of the line.

“Yah~ are you drunk? Of course it’s me! Don’t tell me you forgot the date today?”

“No - no. I’m not. Where... where are you now?” His voice were shaking, he didn’t know how to control it right now. Sungmin asked him what’s wrong, but his mind was just too filled with every possibility, that Sungmin finally surrendered and answered his question.

“Hmm... I’m in the elevator, on my way home. I’ve got a lot of stuff in my hands right now, so I can’t really chat with you right now. Just don’t forget to come okay?”

“O - okay.”

“Sarang-hae.” Click. Sungmin hung up the phone. He glanced at the watch that was shining in his hand. It was 3.15pm. He still got another 45 minutes to save Sungmin.

As fast as lighting, he grabbed his coat and rushed his way to Sungmin’s place. He must be fast enough to reach there in time. Car would be a great help, only if he didn’t have to face the traffic at that time. On foot, Sungmin’s place would take him about 30 minutes or more to get there.

He didn’t know why, but his eyes were teary. His adrenalin was pumping, and keep his feet running. It might be impossible, but he still wanted to save him. He wanted him to be in his embrace once again. He want to see his smile and hear him say ‘I love you’ once again.
He wants Sungmin to be alive again.

He glanced at his watch once again. It has already been 15 minutes since he started to run. His energy was running low, and his chest started to hurt. Yet Kyuhyun still didn’t stop. He still got 30 minutes in his time.

He pulled out his phone, and dialled Sungmin’s house phone number.

“Damn it, Sungmin, pick it up!”

“Hello?”

“Sungmin-ah!! Get out from there, now!!”

“Kyuhyun? What’s wrong?” he didn’t have the time to explain anything to Sungmin right now, since he already arrived at Sungmin’s apartment at that time.

“I’ll tell you later! Just get out from there, now!!”

“Kyu~”

Ding dong! Kyuhyun could hear the doorbell rang, twice.

“Kyuhyun-ah, are you trying to trick me?” Sungmin’s voice turned soft and tricky. Kyuhyun knew it that Sungmin didn’t believe him.

“No I’m not! Just~ did... did the doorbell rang?”

“Aw~ this is so cute Kyu~ I’ll let you in.”

“No! No Sungmin! Please do not open the door!! Please please please!! Shit!! Sungmin!! Dont open... DAMN IT!!” he cussed, as Sungmin already hung up the phone.

Leaping the stairs by two steps, his long legs still didn’t stop from climbing to the eleventh level of the apartment building. All he wished at that time was he didn’t want to see the view that he saw when he came to Sungmin’s place yesterday.

Where Sungmin were lying in a pool of blood, half of his skull was cracked by the baseball bat in his ex-lover’s hands. Where Sungmin didnt move or respond to his calling. Where Sungmin’s beautiful eyes were shut forever. Where the balloons that were filling the apartment splattered with the owner’s blood.

He didn't want Sungmin to die. Once again, he dialled Sungmin. This time, on his handphone.

“Kyuhyun? Why are you calling me again?”

“Sungmin-ah!! Don’t open the door!! The one who is outside your door right now is not me!!”

Click. The connection was lost. Kyuhyun stunned. He stopped for a while, but only for a few seconds. His feet were forcing him to continue.
He arrived at Sungmin’s front door.

The yellow lining of police’s ‘DO NOT CROSS - CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION” was still there, just like yesterday. The mess on the wall and door caused by the baseball bat were still there. The policemen were still there, searching for evidence as much as they could.

He failed. He failed to change the future. Sungmin is still dead. The bracelet in his hand will always stay there. Always.

He turned around towards the elevator, when the number ‘11’ above the elevator’s door lit up. And the door opened, revealing a small man, with one big paper bag in his arms, barely showing his face came out. Kyuhyun could only saw his beautiful eyes behind the paper bag, and he knew that something hot dripping from his eyes.

“Kyuhyun? What are you doing here? I thought you said you got works to do today?”

He didn’t answer the question, instead, he took the bag Sungmin was holding, put it down, and pulled Sungmin into his warm embrace.

“Kyuhyun? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I’m just glad that you’re safe.”

“Aw~ that’s so sweet... come on in, we’ll be in the officer’s way if we’re staying out here.” Sungmin slowly wiped his tears and pulled his hand, leading him into the house.

-

The house was clean, not like it used to be yesterday. There’s no broken lamps, no damages on the wall, and the most important thing is, there’s no dead Sungmin in there. The one thing that cleansed all his tiredness of running along with his sweats.

“I wonder what would happen if you didn’t call me on my handphone yesterday.” Oh Kyuhyun knew so well what would’ve happen. He’ll lose Sungmin once again.

“Just what happened yesterday?”

“You didn’t remember? That’s weird, Kyuhyun. You’re the one who came and stopped that guy.” Well, that is just one thing that didn’t plant in his head. But Kyuhyun just didn’t have the energy to think about it.

Sungmin is alive in front of his eyes right now. Sungmin is smiling in front of him. Sungmin is talking and telling him stories. That’s far more than enough.

“Yesterday before you left, you told me that you got something to give to me. As our anniversary gift. What was it?”

Kyuhyun wasn’t sure what he told Sungmin at that time, but he was sure that it was that thing he promised.

“Sungmin-ah, close your eyes.” He grabbed Sungmin’s hand, and put the bracelet on it. It was a plain silver bracelet, with a bunny head on its lock.

As Sungmin was admiring the bracelet in his hand, Kyuhyun pulled him into his embrace, and kissed his lips.

“Sungmin-ah, thanks for being in my arms again.”

And he was just glad that the bracelet was wrapping Sungmin's wrist, and he hope that it will stay there for a long, long time.
