Because he never wanted to be loved like that.
*
I didn’t know love has come.
I didn’t know I am in love.
-
Heechul takes a deep breath, and tilts his head, eyes wide open. The sky above him is so blue, without any white clouds to taint it. He wonders what is waiting for him up above the sky. A few seconds warming up his mind thinking about it, he then looks down beneath his feet. The white and fierce waves are crashing the sharp rocks that wait for his body to hit them. He takes a step forward, hands at the back, fisting against each other. A few small lumps of hard soil fall as he kicks them unintentionally.
“Hankyung... I will get at you back for leaving me like this!!” his voice is hoarse, his eyes are teary, his face is pale. The winds is blowing hard, that makes his body sways to the left, but still, he tries his best to not to fall, not yet. He is ready for another crying-my-heart-out moment.
“You will be so sorry for marrying her! My unrest soul will haunt you till the day you die!! You bastard!” his hands are cupping around his mouth. The tears that has been there accompanying him from the day Hankyung left him finally falls to the ground.
He peeks at the rocks beneath him once again. He wonders if it is just his imagination, but just now, the rocks finally seem to become a bit scary. His body is trembling. But just to calm his own heart down, he keeps saying that it is because of the breeze that simply becomes colder since he is on the highest cliff by the sea.
“Urmm... it’s not like I really wanted to die, right? This is just a symbolic of a broken heart, right?” he steps two times backward, trying his best again to balance his slim body not to fall and hit the scary rocks, this time he really doesn’t want to die. But maybe, just maybe, this time his luck is fooling around with him.
As he turns to walk away, his left foot slips and drags his body to the end of the cliff. Luckily, both of his hands are strong enough to grab some tree roots that are sticking out from the cracks of the rocks. Still in a state of shock, he finally realise that he is going to die soon if there is no one there to help him, which seems to be he is going to die soon. Well, nobody is in sight anyways.
“He - help!! I, I’m not planning to die yet!! Help me!!” he keeps repeating those silly words with tears that flowing nonstop from his huge eyes. And when he is just about to let go and accept his oncoming death, a pair of strong hands grabs his arms and pulls him up once again.
A tall man is panting in front of him, his huge left hand is covering his forehead, and half of his eyes, trying to catch up with his breathing once again. Heechul too is doing the same thing. In his too-rapid-to-be-alive heartbeat, his eyes are looking secretly at his saviour.
His clothes are sloppy, like some participant in the Survivor reality show, but maybe he is a bit neater, just a bit neater. His hair is a mess, and so does his whiskers. A peek again, and Heechul thinks that he looks just like a retired Kangta. “Tha - thank you, mister.” But what he started as a polite thanking ceremony ends with a cry of pain as the saviour knocks Heechul’s hard head with his even harder elbow.
“Are you stupid or what? Just because you are dumped by some stupid man, you’re actually trying to commit suicide. Aha, what a great idea.”
“I don’t need your sarcastic words, mister. Just so you know, I wasn’t trying to kill myself.” Heechul stands up and pat his laps, dusting off every possible dirt that stuck when he was lying on the earth floor.
“Uhuh? Then what was that?” the tall man too, gets up and do the same thing. Heechul turns and points his index finger towards the man and smirks;
“I was enjoying the season of heartbreak, genius.”
-
“It is at times like this that we will be able to narrate revenge to our lovers, man. Don’t you think so?” the sloppy man in front of him is pulling the hot ramen into his mouth, then blows the hot air in and out of it, and repeat the same actions again until all his noodles gone. He then shows Heechul the empty cup and gives some puppy eyes, asking the latter to buy him another one. Heechul snorts and try to look away, when the man slowly fondles his chin and pulls Heechul face to meet with his.
It is unexpected for the tall man and Hankyung to have the same type of pleading to others, but it is the truth. Heechul is aware that his face is red, so quickly, he pulls out his seasoned leather wallet and hands in a total 2000 won, a bit too precise with the coins count to complete the value. The tall man then smirks, and gives him an unforeseen small peck on the cheek.
“Cheapskate old man.”
“Said a parasite to his host.”
He snickers. He rubs the cheek that the man kissed, and he wonders why he must smile at this moment.
-
“This Hankyung guy, what has he done to you that makes you hate him so much?” the tall man licks the cold blue and green stick in front of his face, the ice-cream that he finally decided to have as a desert instead the second cup of ramen, his feet keeps pushing the ground so that his swing doesn’t stop. Heechul laughs hard enough that the tall man stops and stares at him with a contorted face.
“Geez you’re scaring me, man.”
“Sorry. Hankyung... Hankyung... Hankyung did nothing to me, he was a wonderful partner, except when he left me and said that he needs to go back to China so that he can manage his parent’s food legacy and marry a girl that they had chosen for him.” The tall man is still fixing his gaze onto his face that Heechul feels a bit awkward with it. “Am I that pretty?”
“Huh? Who?” the tall man asks, his face clearly shows that he is confused by Heechul’s unexpectedly mordacious question. Heechul pulls out another huge laugh, he thinks that the tall man’s face is so funny when he is confused, and starts to lose his balance on the swing that a few seconds later, as if the world is spinning in a weird way.
“Damn it, man. What the hell that was so funny about my question?” the man groans, as Heechul is literally lays his full body on top of the man’s huge built. Heechul quickly stood; this strange man in front of him is giving a mysterious vibration alongside with his caring-but-mean attitude. His disturbed face almost resembles Hankyung.
“Sorry. I... I never thought that... that you... have so many things in common with him.”
The man shuts his mouth, letting the ice-cream he was eating earlier to melt in his huge hand. But then, after the last drop of the ice-cream falls on the ground, he throw the wooden stick and pulls Heechul’s hand, waking the latter up from his thoughts.
“It is a bit late to ask you this, but... what should I call you?” the warmth of his hands is so overwhelming, that in that instant, Heechul feels as if he would smack just anyone who tells him to let go of the hands.
“Hee - Heechul. Kim Heechul. You?”
“Choi Siwon.”
Heechul tightens his grips, and put his head down, looking at the pavement that they are stepping on.
“Damn it, man. This is weird. Every single thing that you do, I can see him in you. You are just like him. This will be hard for me just to think about it.” His other hand palms his wet eyes, trying to stop his hiccups that start to form in his throat. But then, Siwon’s huge arms slowly hug his shoulders, calming him with a gentle smile.
“I don’t know why am I doing this, but let’s go back to your place and tell me everything about this guy that you love so much. Maybe you can figure it out that there are possibilities that your love to him is not that great.”
“Why it must be my place?” he shoves the arms, and found out that even under his sloppy self, Siwon got a charming face hidden behind it.
“Because I’m your parasite, and you’re my host. Didn’t you say so?”
-
“Can I use your shaver, Heechul-shii?” his hands stop stirring the milky coffee, and his mind is trying to remember where he put that little dangerous thing. “Yeah sure. It’s in the drawer in there. But...”
“Found it!! And geez... this is...” Siwon examines the blade on the shaver, and the red stain doesn’t seem to be a simple paint. Siwon snorts and yells again at Heechul, telling him that he had found the shaver. He doesn’t hear a word coming back from Heechul as a reply, so he put the blades under the running tap water, cleaning the stain away, when Heechul springs into the shower and grabs the sharp tool from Siwon’s hands.
“Don't!” he shout, unconsciously put the blade near his chest, as if it is something precious to him. Siwon lifts his left eyebrow, not satisfied with what Heechul did. He leans against the cold wall of the shower, folds his arms and looks at Heechul in a way which Heechul would love to classify as a despicable manner.
“Don't... wash it.”
“Why?”
“Just...don’t. This blade means a lot to me.”
“How so?”
“It was the second thing that hurts me the most after Hankyung left.”
Without him noticing it, while he is giving his back to Siwon, the younger man slowly makes his way behind him and hugs him close to his bare, wet body. A sensation tickles him in the stomach, but Heechul decides to not to notice that. Still, he can feel his body trembling to the simple touch. Siwon then tips his fingers from Heechul’s thin arms down to his wrists that are clenching the blade, and splits them away from each other. He pulls the left hand that is holding the blade up, brings it near his face, and kisses it gently. Heechul squints, shocked by the sudden intimate behaviour by the man he barely known for a few hours.
“But it’s dirty. So we must clean it.” he tries to pull away the blade from Heechul’s hand, but fails. Sniffing into the elder’s thick, striking blonde hair, he then lifts the latter’s skinny body by the waist to under the running shower, wetting his body from head to toe.
“You idiot scumbag!! I’m soaking wet!! Let me go!!”
But his hands are still locking the elder’s waist. Siwon then put down his rear end onto the wet white marbled floor, forcing Heechul to sit together with him.
“Does Hankyung really that precious to you? Nobody can be his replacement?”
He nods. Tears are pooling underneath his eyes, but the water from the shower successfully brings it down together as they flow down his face. Siwon chuckles, and pulls his face closer then plants a simple kiss on his lips. Heechul is stunned once again.
“Not even with that?” he shakes his head, but his eyes are closing and his lips are parted, showing that he is waiting for another kiss. Siwon smiles, and gives him one more kiss, this time longer than the last one.
And when their breath are mingling above one another, panting, Heechul moves his hand to Siwon’s now jerking nipples, and say;
“Make love to me, right now, Siwon-shii.”
-
But Siwon refused to do so. He smacks the elder’s head and lifts him up, tells him to get out so that he could finish his shower.
“Are you really rejecting me? Are you sure? I was giving in just now, there’ll be no second chance for you anymore, Mister!!” he slams the door and walks to his bedroom. His face is red, ashamed of what happened and of what he had offered to Siwon and of the fact that he was rejected.
In his room, he curses as he slumps his body onto his therapy bed, still don't want to believe everything that happened just now. He toss and turns on the bed and throw away Siwon’s clothes onto the floor, saying that once he hates the one who wears it, he’ll hate everything about him. But then an envelope that is sticking out from Siwon’s crumpled clothes next to him is drawing him to open it.
In the bathroom, Siwon is humming to a love song that pops in his head after he saw Heechul’s blushing face. He then laughs and slowly whispers;
“You got yourself a cute lover in here, hyung, so no wonder you were having a hard time to choose.”
-
He just got out from the shower, and drying his hair, when Heechul comes and throws a bunch of pictures to him in the face. Siwon smirks, he knew it. Heechul is not someone who bluntly gives trusts in people.
He bends down and picks up the scattered pictures on the floor. The pictures of Heechul. The picture when he was having a lunch in a family restaurant, the picture when he was having a lonely walk by the seaside, the picture when he was walking to work.
“Who the hell are you, really?? Why are you doing this?? A stalker?? And I even brought you here into my house!!”
Siwon doesn’t utter a thing. He lays the collected pictures on the desk next to Heechul’s bed, silently puts on his clothes back, and finally turns to face Heechul.
“I... was hired by Hankyung hyung to see how you are doing after he left. To make sure that you’re leading a good life, to stop you from doing stupid things like you did today.”
“What? Why?” Heechul can feel his eyes stinging. His tear ducts works really well today.
“Because he still loves you.”
“Then tell him to cancel the marriage, and come back to me.”
Siwon moves forward, and hold his forearms slightly hard, that Heechul jolts.
“You know that he can’t do that, right?”
Heechul nods. And Siwon smiles, as he put his knapsack onto his shoulder, and pats Heechul’s head.
“You don't have to come of you don't want to, but here’s the airplane ticket for the wedding. Once you got there, call this number.”
He blinks his doe eyes a few times, looking at the number in his hands. It says ‘Hangeng’ on it.
“Or you can call him after I leave. Bye.” He kisses Heechul on the cheek for the last time and walks out the door.
Heechul still doesn’t want to move from the spot, his eyes are still on the door, and to the number in his hand.
He then decides to make a long-distance call tonight.
-
The wedding reception is made in a five-stars hotel, which is owned by Hankyung’s family. The bride and the groom are sitting at a special table on a stage with their respected family, under a spotlight, to show that they are the main event for tonight. A few walks away from the main table, Heechul smiles and lifts his cup of wine when he saw Hankyung looking at him and did the same thing first.
It would be a lie, if he says that he doesn’t feel anything seeing Hankyung next to his bride. His heart is stinging, as if someone rips it open and pokes at the wound, or wrapping it with metal blades.
Hankyung was his first love, his real first love. The first person that threats him nicely. How could he not fall in love with someone like that?
He was paralyzed when Hankyung was gone a few months ago, leaving him only with an apology note and their couple ring. He didn't feel like eating at all. He almost loses his job, and he thought of taking his own life more than a dozen of times. But then the pain itself slowly fades away.
Was it because if Siwon? But he only knew the guy for a day, and it was way several months ago. Why must he dream about him over and over again in the next days after left him? Sometimes he even thought that he thinks about Siwon more than he is about Hankyung. And that was just wrong.
He did asked Hankyung about who Siwon is, and Hankyung told him that he’s a beloved cousin. Then he asked again about what Siwon actually do, but Hankyung just told him that he himself isn’t sure of Siwon’s job is, but generally, he’s a traveller. He won’t stay for long at a place. And for some reason he stopped asking.
And just a few minutes later, a sound of glass clanging against a metal spoon is filling the now silent hall. A tall man, with clean face and two deep dimples that digs his cheeks when he smile is standing, greeting everyone around him with honour before he say something in Chinese, that is not fully understood by Heechul, but he can figure that it was a wish of well-being and congratulation since this a wedding ceremony after all.
And just when the tall man is about to sit down that he finally realised it was Siwon. Of course, without his whiskers.
-
“You’re here,” he says, as he comes and sits down next to Heechul. Heechul snorts and turns his head away.
“Of course, I got a free ticket, why shouldn’t I come, right? This is like a vacation.” Siwon smiles and chuckles. “Are you okay with it?”
“Yeah. I’m cool.” His cheeks are red, as he can feel a huge hand is gently palming the top of his left hand under the table. Siwon smiles, as he likes what he sees in front of him right now.
He puts his head down, and tries to pull his hand away, but he can’t. Siwon is not letting him go.
“B - by the way, you’re a true liar.”
“Excuse me?” Siwon looks into his eyes with his own eyes widely opened like a pair of spotlight.
“Hankyung told me, that he didn't hire you, or told you to go to Korea and search for me. He simply asked you to post the ticket along with his letter, which I didn't receive it from you.”
And then the lights are off. A dragon is dancing in front of the bride and groom, and the only light is focusing on it.
“Because it was not a good way to invite someone who used to be your lover to your wedding that way. And I finally can meet you again, after all.”
“Meet me? Again?” Siwon smiles again, and this time, Heechul can feel a warm kiss on his cheek.
“I’ve known you since a few years ago, when Hankyung first told me that he was dating a guy. And we’ve even met once, but maybe you don't remember me. I came to visit Hankyung and you were there in his house, drunk and kissing him like a whore. Haha.”
Heechul tries so hard to remember the man next to him, and maybe he did have a faint memory of what Siwon told him just now.
“You must hate me so much back then.” Heechul digs his chin deeper into his own chest, even more embarrassed as Siwon tells him that.
“No, I actually fell in love with you right at the moment. I wanted to see you again, but Hankyung hyung said that you were so ashamed of that and didn't want to see me anymore.”
Heechul lifts his head, and sees the charming gentleman in front of him smiling.
“I was a bit disappointed. Of the fact that you were Hankyung’s boyfriend, and the fact that you didn't want to see me. But after a few years, I still had you in my mind.”
He just doesn’t know what to say anymore. Siwon’s confession feels like a dream, and he doesn’t feel like waking up from it. But he is scared too. The fact that he is falling in love with this man not long after he broke up with Hankyung is terrifying for some reasons.
“Can I ask you one thing?” Heechul turns to face Siwon, his hand still doesn’t want to let go of Siwon’s.
“Sure.”
“If I told you that my mind was full of nothing but only you after you left, would you believe it?”
Siwon ducks down and lifts his hand from under the table, then kiss it softly;
“Maybe it isn’t so convincing for me, but I would like to give my all in believing it.”
“Then, I pronounce you, my surrogate lover.”
Heechul bends down, pulls Siwon together with him, and kiss him quickly, but deeply on the lips.
