My sixth thread in a row, or something

James thumbed anxiously through the pages of Bane: Keep Your Family Safe From Werewolves before discarding it and picking up the next one. He had a stack of books beside him which he'd taken out in pretence of doing a research project. Well, it was a research project, it just wasn't going to get assessed ( Read more... )

Eden followed her instincts and headed towards the library. It was getting a little late, but she'd had a small study group to go to and she hadn't seen James yet today.

Reaching the doors, she pulled them open, her sharp eyes lighting on her boyfriend, working studiously. She smiled, happy to see him. She was feeling better now she was in that week or so where the moon wasn't close enough to bother her yet, but had been gone long enough for her to have recovered. It was the time she felt the most...well, normal.

Creeping closer on quiet feet, Eden stepped up behind him. "Boo!" she whispered, right into his ear. He was so distracted she was sure she'd managed to surprise him.

James jumped, his heart leaping into his throat. "Merlin's balls, Eden," he hissed, earning a glare from the librarian. "You almost made me lose my dinner."

Laughing, she slid her hands over his shoulders, sliding them down until she could rest her chin on the top of his head.

"What you doing?" she asked curiously, "'Cus, you know, I'm feeling very good today..." She pressed a quick kiss to his temple, removing one of her hands to wave off the tutting librarian.

"Glad to hear it," he said, letting his book fall closed with his finger to mark the place. He twisted around so he could pull her down by her robes and kiss her properly.

"Hush," he said desperately. "Unless you want the whole castle to hear - Eden, for all anyone knows I'm writing a paper on werewolves for my NEWT."

"It's too dangerous! You're playing with fire, but it'll be me who gets burnt. Stop this. There's nothing I can do but lay low and try and live out the rest of my life is relative peace and secrecy."

She backed up, almost cringing from the books on the table. "And if you don't understand that, then..." she trailed off, unable to even say it, but the look in her eyes spoke volumes. "This is what I am," she whispered, "Accept it, or don't."

She gazed at him for a long moment before turning her back to him.

"I thought I already had," he said helplessly. "If you won't let me help you, then I... I can't... I can't just sit around and do nothing!"

She turned back around, hearing the confusion and powerlessness in his voice. "I thought you had too, but I'm not so sure anymore. I've accepted it, there's nothing that can change it. You help, as much as anyone can. I have it a lot better than some of the others. There is no miracle cure, and maybe it's that you have to accept."

"That's a hell of a lot of 'if's'..." she snapped back. "Just leave it alone. If in the future there's a cure, then of course I'd want it, but there's not now, and cooped up in Hogwarts isn't the best place to start looking for one. I just want to get through the next few months and get my NEWTs with as little stress as possible! It's hard enough as it is, it's painful and scary and hard to hide. I don't need to worry about the other students, or God forbid, the Prophet to find out. I don't want to be looking over my shoulder constantly, afraid someone's going to work it out because you want to fix it for me."

He shook his head, stunned. "I can't believe you," he said, stunned and angry. "You aren't being fair at all."

"I know," she admitted, "but all this is dangerous; for me, for you, for Hogwarts, your family... I know you think you're doing whats best, but I don't agree," she said, shrugging. "I'm sorry, I know your hearts in the right place, but I can't do this, and as it's my problem, I get the deciding vote."

"Fine," he said, shorter than he'd meant to. "Fine, if that's the way you feel about it, I won't try and help you anymore."
