secure the job and then move. It's just too expensive, especially here in Chicago. Did you tell the guy that you are willing to relocate? You are always welcome to stay with us a weekend or something for an interview if you need to!
Yes, he knew that I am more than will to relocate to whereever I need to. Apparently, I need to already have a place to live in the Chicagoland before they will even consider me.
Is their offer still on the table if you were in chicagoland? Why not tell him you already have a place there and are moving into it in a week, even if you don't actually have one. If you've got the job secured it's a piece of cake to find an actual place, and theres always friends/hotels in the short meantime.
That is such bullshit! How, in the course of his previous interview with you, did he somehow miss that you weren't in the Chicagoland area? And then he leads you on like that? Bullshit.
Secure the job, then move. It's too expensive to live in Chicago without first being employed, and many (most) places won't rent to you if you aren't currently gainfully employed. It's possible to get a roommate and avoid that particualr hassle, but then you still have to pay to be here, and there's no guarantee on finding a job even when you're in the area- I've got two friends who have been trying to find something more stable than their "temporary" retail positions for the last year and are still having no luck.
It wasn't that he missed that I wasn't in the Chicagoland area. He knew perfectly well. From what I gathered, he didn't know about that particular policy. What aggravated me about this though is that this isn't the first city that I have dealt with this particular company (it's a staffing agency) however this is the first I have heard of this policy.
As for St Louis, I'm looking/keeping my ears open. I managed to do some networking over the weekend when I was in Indianapolis so I got some new leads. Just gotta check them out now though.
Ooohhh Indianapolis! From everything I've heard, an excellent growth market right now in terms of jobs, and has an incredibly reasonable cost of living (unlike Chicago). I lived near there for a couple years, and it's actually a pretty good little city, lots of fun and interesting stuff to do, and from what I hear, a decent night life.
