[series]: Suikoden
[character]: Gremio
[character history / background]: Biography on Gensopedia
[character abilities]: As a former soldier, Gremio is certainly capable of fighting. His deceptively slender form holds enough strength to wield a battleaxe and the ability to withstand enemy blows; in terms of style (and in-game stats) he is more defensive than offensive and will protect Tyr if his charge is in danger.

However, combat alone is not where his specialties lie. Perhaps more than anything else, Gremio is highly skilled in domestic chores: housekeeping, laundry, and especially cooking. The food he prepares is exceptional, particularly his stews.

[character personality]: If Gremio was to be summed up by a single phrase, it would be: mother hen. Doting and overprotective, he is a terrible fretting worrywart who concerns himself with little more than Tyr's well-being. Throughout the years, he cared for Tyr and came to view him as his own son, developing an unswerving loyalty that nothing could shake.

Gremio's highly protective nature means he can be impulsive and irrational where Tyr is concerned; when a young Tyr was kidnapped and held hostage, Gremio killed the bandits responsible in retaliation. Thus he is not above killing those who would harm his charge, although his temper has probably evened as he grew older. Nevertheless, he is still quick to grow indignant whenever anyone insults or threatens Tyr. It is simply a part of his devotion.

The loyalty he feels towards Tyr is absolute, even in the face of treason and danger. Although he might scold and question his master's decisions, this is done more out of a concern to ensure that Tyr knows what he is doing and will not regret those choices. So despite any initial protests, Gremio still follows without hesitation and always places Tyr's life above his own.

However, that is not to say that Gremio has blind faith in him, either. The reason he approves of Tyr's choices and helps him in the Liberation Army is because he too cannot ignore the corruption and wrongdoings he sees in the empire. Gremio takes pride in knowing that Tyr is following his heart and doing what he knows is right as opposed to ignoring what they see around them.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: After his death at Soniere prison, during Suikoden I.

[journal post]: G-goodness, Young Master! The kitchen is in a terrible state--I'm afraid I'll have to spend some time cleaning it--and please tell me you've been eating right this entire time!

Not to worry, Young Master. I, Gremio, will be more than happy to prepare a feast for you! I shall write a grocery list, so please pick up everything we need.

[third person / log sample]: When had Tyr grown so strong? Gremio wondered where the time had gone, marvelled at how quickly it seemed his young master had changed from a mischievous child to the commander of a powerful rebel force. He couldn't keep himself from worrying--really, he would never stop being concerned, especially with all that was happening. There were things he couldn't protect Tyr from, no matter how much he might wish he could...but he was also realizing that the young master was becoming quite capable of protecting himself.

That knowledge brought with it a mixture of feelings: although sad that he was no longer needed as much as he wanted, that his precious charge was growing independent, those very same things also made Gremio proud. Nothing could quell the immense pride and satisfaction he felt at seeing Tyr grow into such a capable, reliable, and just person.

In summary, he supposed, he felt like any normal parent watching his child become an adult.

And as much as he wanted to fret over, worry about, and dote on Tyr every step of the way, Gremio also knew that he had to take a step back and allow the young master to do as he needed. Of course, that didn't mean Gremio would ever stop supporting him. Perhaps Tyr no longer required him as a protector, but he would always be by his master's side, ready to do anything asked of him.

If necessary, Gremio wouldn't hesitate to lay down his own life for the person most dear to him.

[additional sample]:Gremio bustled around the upper level of Toran castle, cleaning here, straightening there, and checking his pot of stew every so often. Really, this place was disastrous--only to be expected of a previously abandoned building, of course, but there was not the slightest chance he was going to allow them all to live in filth, even as the traitors they were.

Traitors...The idea no longer seemed so appalling. Certainly not after what they had witnessed, the abuses heaped on innocent people who could not defend themselves. The Imperial rulers and forces existed for the citizens; without them, there could be no empire. But if the empire would not protect its own people, who would help them? The answer was the Liberation Army, to which Gremio would lend all of his support to defend the innocent.

However, he could not believe that all the forces of the empire would abide such atrocities, either. What, after all, of Master Teo? The general was a good man; powerful, yet also fair and just in his treatment of both family and servants alike. Since escaping the capital, they had not yet had the chance to speak with him, but surely he would understand--or so Gremio hoped, though he couldn't help but worry. A part of him still felt indebted to his master for saving the life of one lowly soldier all those years ago. Yet he knew as well that they would inevitably come face-to-face and there remained the very real possibility that the Liberation Army would have to meet the general in battle.

Even knowing that, Gremio still could not regret his decision--apologies to Master Teo, but he knew in his heart that this was the right course of action. Whether they would have to face each other...it still lingered at the back of Gremio's mind, but there were more pressing concerns at the moment.

Specifically, he was quite sure several new recruits had just come in. That was all well and good, but he hadn't yet prepared nearly enough stew for all of them! The cleaning would have to be put on hold while he put together some more. After all, an army couldn't fight on an empty stomach.
