i dont think there are any good books because canon tries to recomend you use their software to open up raw files. the canon software sucks ass. it has like 2 good features, but they are only good if you severely under expose or over expose an image. from what i can tell, the best way to open a raw image is via photoshop. and you can only do it with photoshop CS with the newest raw file converter plug in (which is free) for the 20d. its great cause all the color corrections, contrast corrections and sharpening you do in the raw file is done to the binary shit in the file, before pixels are even made, so you get no banding or lost of tone. its hard to explain, but your best bet is to just start fucking with it. and stay away from the canon software.

yeah i used the canon one and it seemed pretty bare bones. i've heard about the one in CS but all I have a copy of is 7.0. PS elements came with the camera but i don't think it has the RAW plug in. i'm gonna try to get a copy of CS from my brother

What do you think of the new digital RAW negative format that Adobe is coming out with? I love RAW formats, but hate how much space they take up on my D1. I'd like to see a universal RAW format, because I worry about the ability to open up my .NEF files in ten+ years.

I haven't heard about the new Adobe RAW format, I will have to read up on it. I wonder about the longevity of the RAW files too but I'm sure there will be a way to read them in the future. I would prefer to shoot in RAW+JPG all the time but my 1GB card can only hold 77 pictures in that setting.

Do you shoot RAW 100% of the time?

The RAW jpeg is called jpg-2000 and is supported I believe by PS-cs (which I have and hate! It's a complete memory hog, and liked PS7 more!) For a long time t he only way to read NEF was to sue Nikon's proprietary software, and Canon was the same way, but there are plugins now Canon, and Nikon's RAW files.

I haven't tried to yet to see if CS support NEF files natively or not yet, so I still shoot jpg out of my camera. But I like Adobe's new universal digital negative RAW format, and I think the new D2X and D2Hs support it. Don't know about Canon, Minolta, or Pentax's dSLR cameras do in regards to this.
