Being Ore-sama

1. Fair play
All’s fair in love, war and tennis; if he has to destroy his opponent to achieve victory, so be it.

2. Bones
The first time he lost a match, he spent all night furiously slamming balls all over his private courts even when the rain started to fall and drenched him to the bone.

3. Desire
He sees his own desire reflected in his teammates' eyes; this year, they will sweep the National championship and prove Hyotei’s superiority.

4. Flower
He doesn’t enjoy gardening but when his mother, home for the first time in a long while, calls him to help her with the planting of several narcissuses, he doesn’t hesitate to put Homer down and respond to her request.

5. Jump
Very few things make Ore-sama flustered but the appearances of cockroaches out of small, dark places can still compel him to leap unto the nearest chair and call for someone to get rid of the pestilence.

6. Mother
When he was younger, he mistakenly took his babysitter to be his mother; he locked himself in his room for a full day and refused to eat when he finally discovered the truth.

7. Father
Someday he will inherit his father’s business and step into his shoes as one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Japan, but the future is not here yet and the Championships are in a month.

8. Saliva
Spitting on the sidewalk is an uncouth, plebeian habit he carefully refrains from practicing; nothing disgusts him quite as much as seeing a small spit-puddle on the grey pavement.

9. Primary Colors
When he works on his choice for double pairs, Atobe perceives it as picking colors; each player is a certain primary color and it is just a matter of choice of which two, when overlapped, will produce the most brilliant shade.

10. Ideal
He has no role model he aspires to emulate; after all, being Ore-sama is already a privilege in itself.

11. Challenge
Atobe loves challenges; they are only more opportunities for him to display his superiority.

12. Face
Oshitari’s face was priceless when he first told the tensai bluntly that he was going to play doubles and he was going to excel in it, was he clear.

13. Comfort
There is no sensation quite like the comfort of sinking back into soft pillows knowing that everything is completed and neatly stacked up on the side of your desk, ready to be handed in tomorrow.

14. Homeland
Every time he steps into the yellow lines outlining the court, sees the net and the opponent awaiting him on the far end, he feels as if he is truly home as the ball spirals into the air and he serves.

15. Window
He sees Kabaji from the third-floor window when he is in his second year; the next day, the tall freshman trails Atobe, carrying his bag as he complacently ignores the stares of the startled second-years around him.

16. Black cloud
Ore-sama is never angry; he is merely miffed or displeased and it would be very wise for you to stay out of Ore-sama’s sight for several days.

17. Call
Every once a week, he will be obligated to receive a call from his father; it will involve ‘how do you do’s, inquiries about his studies and stiff formalities that shouldn’t be present in a paternal conversation.

18. Sense
All his teammates could do with a healthy bout of common sense, but as long as it didn’t affect their playing, he would leave it be.

19. Design
He believes in fate and karma but doesn’t hesitate to tweak and forcibly change it when it doesn’t favor him.

20. Try
Gakuto is a bouncy, loud risk when he first enters the courts and insults half of the players practicing on them, but Atobe agrees to give him a chance and pits him up against the strongest player available.

21. Power
Three months into his second year at Hyotei, Atobe was already the captain of the tennis club, the top student of the school and a favored candidate for student body president.

22. Fingers
The fingers that could dance across the plane of piano keys with such ease and skill are also the same ones which had two hundred tennis players beneath their fingertips.

23. Damage
One of the reasons he supports Shishido’s return to the Regulars is partly due to the damage his absence causes to his players line-up and a noticeable lack of grumpy, sarcastic words on court.

24. Sides
He later tells Shishido that Ore-sama doesn’t take sides for mere trivial reasons, so he’d better make this second chance count.

25. Glue
He doesn’t see the need to do this when they could just call the freshmen to complete the job, but as everyone laugh at Gakuto and Jirou accidentally sticking the banner to the wall upside down and make sarcastic jokes amongst themselves, he thinks he may be starting to understand.

26. Natural
Everyone thinks he’s a natural at everything he does, and he is, at some; the others are skills honed through grueling practice and intense training into flawless perfection.

27. Respite
He has been at the paperwork so long that the brief break makes him feel slightly light-headed; he takes a deep breath before returning to the forms regarding the Nationals and the upgrade in the Physics laboratories’ facilities.

28. Wrong
The first time he corrected his Greek teacher on a mispronunciation, the man had patronized him until Keigo got tired, stood up and told him he was fired in perfect Greek.

29. Accuse
Atobe has been accused of being narcissistic, egoistical and full of himself; he merely smirks at their jealousy.

30. Morning
Waking up to the yells of Shishido demanding Gakuto hand his cap back and Ohtori anxiously asking them to keep the noise down always causes him to wonder why he invites them to stay over in the first place.

31. Haunted
Breakfast almost always reminds him why when amiable words are exchanged over parfait and toast and heated debates fill the large room which used to be haunted by only his lone presence and a deafening silence.

32. Bite
That and the fact that they are all good tennis players; this is the only thing that prevents him from chucking them all out into the hot sun outside when Gakuto talks while biting his toast and successfully sprays Shishido with several crumbs of bread, starting off another loud and furious argument at the table.

33. Trail
He never trailed behind anyone when he played 'Follow The Leader' as a child; he was the leader.

34. Note
He merely sighs to himself when he receives yet another anonymous note in his locker, proclaiming eternal love to him alone; Ore-sama is very handsome and knows it, but really, there is a reason why Valentine’s Day was introduced after all.

35. Go
He thinks twice about Oshitari’s invitation to come with the rest of the team to the amusement park; two hours later, he is on the Ferris wheel, overlooking what seems to be the whole of Tokyo as Jirou rocks the small carriage in excitement.

36. Hat Box
When his maternal grandmother’s birthday comes around, he sends her a vintage hat box via air mail; the note she sends back pulls a wry smile unto his face as he reads her brief words.

37. Upside down
Atobe learns what uncertainty is the day Tezuka didn’t forfeit and turns all his carefully laid-out strategy upside down by continuing the game.

38. Concentrate
Really, he thinks in amusement as he smashes an ace across the net, it takes more than a few poorly-worded taunts to make him lose his focus.

39. Liar
He tells himself that he’s fine and that losing to Echizen is just a fluke; he is a lousy liar and knows it.

40. Hour
Most of his free hours are spent perusing Aristotle’s De Longitudine et Brevitate Vitae and only dinner has him closing it reluctantly; it is against proper etiquette to read at the table.

41. Tie
He doesn’t hesitate to tell Jirou to readjust his tie when it is crooked; after all, the tennis team has an image to maintain before the rest of the school.

42. Change
When his mother comes back for a visit and comments on how much he’s changed, Keigo frowns slightly and wonders what prompted those sudden words.

43. Kaleidoscope
Atobe’s net play is rather like Ore-sama himself; a dazzling kaleidoscope of skill and brilliance that overpowers any obstacles in his way.

44. Scar
When the whole team gathers to watch The Lion King, Atobe finds himself amused by Scar; really, telling your adversary the truth at any given time is a foolish act to do.

45. Disaster
He remains calm when Hyotei loses to Seigaku in the regionals; once back at the school, he will pinpoint exactly what it was that had cost them the win.

46. Unzipped
Making an annoyed sound, Atobe tells Oshitari dryly to check his pants before he leaves the house next time and spare the rest of them.

47. Keep Out
The maids and servants respect Atobe’s privacy and never pry into his personal matters, earning them generous bonuses every end of the month.

48. Separation
His tennis is always kept separated from his personal life; that way, it will be easier to give it up when it is time.

49. Easy
But things are always easier said than done and more than a few memories will be locked away with the racket on that day when he steps up into what is expected of him.

50. Education
He came to Hyotei because it was the most prestigious school in the area; he enters Hyotei’s high-school division with now-familiar faces walking beside him, ready to craft a legend Hyotei will not soon forget.
