Well, today's the day of my operation to fix my deviated septum and some other nasal/sinus issues. Bit nervous. Funnily enough, more about the needle used for the general anaesthetic than about the operation itself. Damn needles! And I just hope the discomfort afterwards isn't too bad. At least I'm not somebody who gets high and loopy from ( Read more... )

I hope your surgery goes well and that you're feeling better (and breathing better) soon!

You'll definitely have time to get caught up on some reading. I've read more in the few weeks since I hurt my ankle and haven't been able to walk than I have since the school year started.

Thanks. I'm surprised how little reading I ended up doing in hospital, actually - I was so dopey all of last night that I spent most of the time sleeping! Ah the wonders of general anaesthetic.

I have a similar issue with my sinuses, to the point where I can't breathe through my nose (yay mouthbreathing 24/7) AND I'm completely devoid of a sense of smell. I've never considered getting the operation done, however: is it expensive? Are Medicare nice enough to cover it or do they consider such an operation to be optional/narcissistic/whatever? Is it good/bad/awful/terrible/wouldn't recommend the operation to your worst enemy?

Thank-you kind sir for any information you throw my way!

Might be a good idea to get it done. Now, I'm on Medicare and the blindness pension, and all I've had to pay is $15 for the post-operation medication I've had to take home with me. Pretty sure that would apply to all public patients. I do think my legal blindness helped me get fast-tracked through the system, but not 100% sure.

The operation itself is no big deal. They put you under general anaesthetic, so there's just the needle/tube in your hand to administer that via a drip, then you wake up feeling pretty groggy in a few hours with gauze and stuff over your nose. No real pain at all. When they take out the packing, it's a bit awkward and bloody, but again, no big deal - and I'm a wimp. I had a bit of a headache this afternoon, so I took two Panamax pills and I've been good since. Still got blood and stuff dribbling out, so it's hard to give much of a definite opinion on recovery yet! Apparently this shouldn't last more than a couple of days, and I have a return appointment on Friday.
