It has just struck me that on the 65th anniversary of the Tangiwai disaster that killed my great-uncles and that my Grandpa somehow survived, I will be riding a long distance train myself. This time from Sydney to Brisbane rather than Wellington to Auckland. Nonetheless, while I'm not the superstitious type, it does feel a little eerie ( Read more... )

I haven't been to them that much myself, but apparently the bookshops to see are in Newtown - there's one with a resident cat. :) Also, there is a bookshop devoted to trains at central station, dunno if there's anything there you wouldn't already have access to, though.

Sadly, I don't spend all that much time in Sydney city during the day, I don't know what the 'things to do' are. Although, as far as museums go, powerhouse is always fun, and I remember the Holocaust Museum in Kings Cross really affected me. Also, have a visit of Darling Harbour as well as the rocks, I think it's even prettier there.
