Apparently the Golden Compass is a trilogy.. I'm kind of interested in seeing it, but I've heard it tries too hard to be Lord of the Rings. I really want to see Atonement though!
they want to see how well the first film does before greenlighting the next two. lord of the rings and the his dark material books are both completely different bags of tricks, though; LotR is straight up fantasy and HDM is more a mix of magic and science/rationality with a huge dash of religion mixed in.
the movie itself isn't bad, just very rushed and expository with lots changed around. if you're planning on seeing it, i recommend you watch THEN read the book so you won't be disappointed~ personally my favourite was the 2nd in the series.
lol I felt that way in the end too. I was expecting something...and then...credits? I don't want to say what I mean because of spoilers for others, but you probably know what I mean.
have you ever played golden sun? i didnt know it was part of a series and it has the SAME kind of end where the main character prattles on a bit about setting things right or whatever and then BAM CREDITS. i was like WTF ARGH NO WAT so i imagine the ending of the movie must have felt the same way for anyone who did not read the books. i did find it extremely puzzling that they ended it where they did, though, and not at, well, the end of the first book.
I have, but I didn't finish it. But yeah, it was so weird. I was like "argh Lyra, yeah you're bringing him what he wants but...!" It's funny because if they maybe stretched it out a little bit longer they could have. Sheesh. It still would have been a cliff hanger but at least it would have been the correct one!
