i'm super bummed to say that after a fun first ep, the hachikuro drama has really gone downhill, devolving into a weird AU fanfic kind of deal. the main problem with it is that it focuses only on the frustrated loves of all the main characters. hachikuro is my favourite manga because i think the real theme is finding purpose in life and in art, and

I totally agree with you (about how it's not about the romance), though one of the scenes I loved from the manga was Takemoto standing with Hagu on a boat, recalling a song from a movie he watched as a child (and the world turns / carrying you). It really hurt to read Hachikuro; there was so much in it I related to. I remember finishing the first six volumes and feeling so emotionally exhausted afterwards, I couldn't find the courage to pick up the rest.
