It’s bright.
Blindingly so when Yuto opens his eyes. Everything around him seems to be radiating their own glow and he can’t see properly without shielding his eyes a bit.
“Ah, you’re awake,” says someone nearby.
When Yuto turns, he finds himself facing Keito, silently perched on a white chair with a book in hand beside him. “Keito?”
He looks around again and deduces that he’s in a hospital which confuses him.
“That’s quite a fall you took just now.”
“Wha-? What happened?” suddenly his head hurts and his hand immediately reach up and massage his head to try and alleviate the pain. He can’t remember anything prior to waking up.
Keito sets down the book he was reading (Yuto notices that it doesn’t have a title or anything written on the front page) and picks up a glass of water from the table nearby.
“Here. Drink first,” Keito instructs him, one hand helping him get up and another slowly helping him take a sip from the glass.
After a while, he feels a little better and Keito returns back to the untitled book.
The glass is now half-empty and the room don’t seem so bright anymore. Yuto looks around in his room and try to make sense of him being in the hospital or the infirmary of some sorts because he doesn’t remember being in any kind of accident and Keito is still being silent with his attention solely on his book only.
“Ne, Keito?” Yuto pokes the older guy for some kind of reaction and all he gets is a ‘hmm’ in reply. “Look at me.”
Keito does as asked but his book is still secure in his grip. “What’s wrong? Are you still hurt?”
“No, no, that’s not it. I’m just wondering, how did I end up here? I don’t really remember anything,” he’s sure he looks so confused to anyone looking right then.
“You were hit.”
“I was hit?”
“Well, not really. Some idiot motorcyclist ran over the red lights when we were crossing the road today. You avoided him just in time but you kind of hit the ground pretty hard. Ring any bell?”
A frown forms on his usually cheery face. He can’t remember anything about the accident Keito just told him and it bothers him a lot. Was he suffering some sort of a short-term amnesia?
When he sees Keito is still looking at him for an answer, he simply shakes his head. “I remember we were out together, but that’s it.”
Keito smiles at him “Don’t worry. It’ll come back to you. Just don’t push yourself too hard, okay?” He’s reassured again by Keito with another smile.
“Okay.”
Suddenly the other stands up from his place and holds out a hand, “you’re feeling better, right? Come on.”
Well, he does feel better and being in a hospital room doesn’t really appeal to him so he scrambles from his bed to get up. “B-but, where are we going?”
He’s given another smile that he thinks may be hiding something behind it but he grabs the offered hand anyway.
“We’re going out. You’re fine now, or do you want to stay here?”
“I’m coming!”
//
Both of them walk down the white-washed hallway side by side. The place seems eerily empty for a hospital. At least, that’s what Yuto think it is.
They’ve been walking for a while before reaching the lobby and Yuto notices something strange.
The receptionist table is empty.
‘Well, that’s not right,’ things are getting more confusing for him by the second. When he peeks a look at Keito, he’s simply walking like nothing is out of place.
But he keeps walking anyway, too many things to think about and he’s still feeling a bit light-headed.
“Keito, where are we going?” he asks, tugging the sleeve of the English boy to catch his attention.
“To town. I’m bored, aren’t you?” Keito shrugs.
Yuto tilts his head, “You’re bored? That’s it?”
Keito nods excitedly. “It’s a nice day to go out to town, ne?”
What’s wrong with Keito today, he wonders.
//
It takes some time for them to reach town and Yuto doesn’t remember ever going through the route Keito took him with which is weird because he’s been to the hospital before and he’s pretty sure it’s not that far from their destination.
When they arrive at some rows of shops, Yuto can make out some sort of procession going on just a little bit farther away from them. Before he could do anything, Keito already drags him into one of the shops there.
“Ne, ne, Yutorin. Isn’t this nice?” Keito shoves something into his hand and proceeds to go off into the depth of shop, leaving him dumbfounded in his spot.
And he just called him ‘Yutorin’.
Shrugging it off to some Keito thing he doesn’t really understand, he turns his attention to the object that was just shoved into his hand. It’s a charm bracelet.
Taking his time to examine it, it is nice. With ropes to join the whole accessory together, the beads are smooth to his touch and he can feel some engraving on it.
Seems like Keito likes dragging him to places today because before he even gets the chance to take a closer look at the engraving, Keito comes out of nowhere and drags him to another shop, with the charm bracelet still with him.
“Wait! The bracelet!” he tries to protest but Keito is not hearing any of it.
“Don’t worry, I’ve already paid for it!” and Keito continues to rush them through the streets to another shop.
//
After going through what seems to an endless string of shops, Keito leads Yuto to the first shop they went to.
Keito seems to have relaxed a bit from his sudden hyper self because there they are, in some small shop, looking the stuff in small woven baskets and random accessory hanging around the shop.
Looking the bracelets littering the table on display, he remembers the one Keito gave to him earlier.
Pulling it out of his pocket, he gives it the once-over before paying a close attention to the engraving since he didn’t get to do so before.
Holding it up to the bright sunlight that’s peeking through the shop’s window, he could make out a capital ‘Y’ and a ‘u’,‘t’ and... ‘o’? It spells out his name?
“Hey, Kei-,“ the last syllable dies on his lips when he sees the boy in question looking at something in his hand so intently with a fond smile sneaking his way to his face.
He peers in from Keito’s shoulder to see it’s another charm bracelet, only it’s made out of metal with engravings on the random charms hanging by the chain.
“Looks like something Ryutaro would like,” he says randomly when he sees the charms.
“Yeah, it does, doesn’t it?” Keito replies, still with that fond smile.
Putting two and two together, Yuto simply hugs his best friend from behind. “Get it.”
“Huh?”
“Get it for him; for Ryuu-chan,” he says with a knowing smile.
Keito hastily put the item back on display hearing it. “I can’t.”
“Why can’t you? I’m sure he’ll like it.”
“That’s not it. It’s just-,” Keito’s words were cut off by the loud ringing of his phone. He flips open the phone and his eyes widen at the mail he just received.
Not waiting any time to lose, Keito grabs Yuto by the hand and leads him out of the shop for the nth time that day.
When they’re outside, Yuto can still see the procession. Breaking free from Keito’s grasp, he heads over to it ignoring Keito’s calls.
He gets closer and he can hear people whispering among themselves. It’s not that crowded that he’s able to pass through the sea of people without much force.
What he’s currently witnessing when gets through it froze him for a while. The logical side of him jolts him back to reality and he turns to Keito who’s standing a few feet away from him with an apologetic look.
He makes his way back to Keito with many questions racing through his mind.
Keito still looks at him with the same look. “Come on. It’s not this you have to see,” he says before gently leading Yuto away from the crowd.
“Am I- Am I dead?” it comes out as barely a whisper out of Yuto. If he’s dead, then why doesn’t he feel like it?
Keito stays silent and looks away from Yuto.
“Keito! Answer me! AM I DEAD?!” he’s becoming more frantic by the passing second and Keito isn’t likely to say anything at that point.
He keeps on tugging the older guy’s shirt until it’s all creased and crumpled at one side.
“We’re here.”
They stop in front of the same hospital that Yuto woke up at.
//
Both of them are silent and Keito is still not looking in his direction.
The empty hospital isn’t so empty now. He can see people bustling through rooms and nurses wheeling patients to their rooms in the hallway.
When they finally stop walking, Keito motions him to go inside the room he was in before.
Slowly, he creeps into the room and sees the bed that he occupied before is surrounded by people. He could see his parents and his little brother. On the bed, he can see himself connected to wires and tubes. He looks so pale it scares him.
“I’m really dead?” he turns to Keito who followed him in.
Keito shakes his head. “Your body is just in shock.”
“So, I’m not dead?”
Keito doesn’t give any reply. Instead, he puts a finger to his lips and points to someone.
There’s another person in the room. He can’t make out who it is because the guy has his head down and his hair is a mess.
“Yuto... wake up, please?” the guy lifts his head to look at the unmoving Yuto. It’s Yamada Ryosuke, crying because of him.
“Yamada...” he can't bear looking at him in that state.
When he turns again he sees Keito is no longer beside him but walking out of the room.
“Keito?” he calls out but Keito keeps on walking.
Keito stops at the door frame and seems to be looking at someone with a wistful look.
It bothers Yuto so he goes outside and sees an all familiar figure on the floor, hunched down and shaking. He can hear small sobs coming from him.
He looks down on Ryutaro and back up to Keito before something dawns on him.
“What-what happened to you, Keito? You never did say,” the unknown answer scares him because he feels like he knows it.
“I couldn’t let you die, could I?”
What?
Suddenly he remembers the accident, just like Keito had told him before only now he remembers Keito pushing him out of harm’s way and ended up getting hit instead and it wasn’t a motorcyclist; it was a car that was coming their way.
His eyes widen at the revelation.
Keito simply offers him a smile and crouches down to sit beside Ryutaro, leaning on him.
“I’m sorry, Keito,” he’s trying so hard not to cry but it’s a failed effort and he lets those tears fall freely.
From his spot, Keito’s phone beeps and he looks at it before looking up to Yuto. “It’s not your fault, please remember that,” he says and pushes himself up.
“My time’s up.”
“Huh? Wait, where are you going? What do you mean?” Keito can’t be leaving him. He just can’t.
“I was just borrowing some time. I can't be here long. Now where’s that bracelet?”
Yuto pulls out the charm bracelet and holds it up. “This?”
“Happy birthday, Yutorin~” says Keito, as he plucks the bracelet out of Yuto's hand and slips it into his right wrist. “You need to go back to them now.”
Yuto looks at the slowly disappearing Keito.
“Keito...”
Flashing him a smile, Keito gives him a thumb up and says, “take care of Ryuu for me, please? And be happy?” before completely disappears from sight.
He grasps the bracelet with all his might before he feels himself disappearing too.
//
It’s bright.
So, so bright when Yuto slowly regains his consciousness. He blinks rapidly for a while, trying to adapt to the sudden burst of light.
The first person he sees is Yamada, with his tear-stricken face breaking into a smile.
He smiles back and sees his family on the other side of his bed.
His mother gets up to call the doctor and his dad goes to pour a glass of water for him. Raiya just smiles and says “I’m glad.”
Yamada is still beside him, holding onto his hand. A few seconds later Ryutaro peeks in the room and goes in. He doesn’t say anything but takes a seat next to Yamada and simply stays there.
Underneath the sheet, his left hand finds its way to his right one and he feels that the bracelet is still there. He has a promise to fulfil.
