He met her for the first time at the school rooftop. She clapped enthusiastically at him playing his second-hand guitar.
-------
“I’m Ayaka. But everybody calls me A~chan.”
“Yaotome Hikaru. Nice to meet you!” he bowed low, partly from being embarrassed being caught playing the guitar on the school rooftop.
“I like what you just played,” he stumbled on his feet and blushed from the compliment.
She laughed and called him cute to which he could only get redder than he already was.
-------
“What are you watching?” he sneaked in behind her, his breath hot on her neck.
“NOTHING!” she immediately closed her laptop, her face red.
He’s already suspicious of her when he saw she’s sitting alone at the back of her class, covering up her inescapable giggles behind her hands every now and then. The melody that came out of her laptop sounded oddly familiar.
“Let me see it!”
“No!”
Hikaru lunged forward, going after her pink laptop. When he managed to get a firm hold of it, Hikaru ran out of the room with it with A~chan trailing behind him.
Arriving at the rooftop, he stopped and opened it quickly. A video of him singing in his room, when he was still learning to play the guitar a few years back was playing.
The door swung open once again.
“…you saw it,” A~chan’s face was red, from all the running and embarrassment of getting caught. She looked down on her feet.
Hikaru gulped and glanced at the laptop screen once again and back at A~chan.
Once everything sank in properly, it was his turn to blush.
“Why were you watching this?!”
“But you were so cute!”
“How did you even get the video anyway?”
“Sono himitsu wo toite~” she sang, making a ‘shh’ sign before turning around and went through the door. He knew immediately who the perpetrator was since it couldn’t be any other person. His best friend’s name immediately made his list.
-------
She held the pillow close to her as she watched the television screen changes from one scene to another.
“Don’t cry anymore. If it were me…” Yuuki looked away, trying to find the right words to use, “if it were me, I wouldn’t do anything to make Mio sad.”
While she was glued to the TV show currently playing, she didn’t notice the front door creaked open and the small ‘tadaima~’ that came after it.
“Boo!”
She let out a high-pitched shriek and then a pair of arms suddenly snaked around her waist. From behind, the culprit chuckled and she knew exactly who it was.
“Hikaruuuu!” she wailed, her hand immediately went up to her chest followed by a dramatic sigh. Then, she turned to him, “I told you not to ever do that again!” but she leaned against him all the same.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” said Hikaru but the wide smile that she knew all too well that followed after the apology tells her otherwise.
“You’re not.”
“I am!”
“Why can’t you be nice like Yuuki-kun?”
“I am Yuuki!”
Silence.
“Do… do you like Yuuki more than me?”
Now he could see the usual playful glint reflected in her eyes. “Well, Yuuki-kun is so nice. Like, he’s so kind to Mio and caring…” she stopped when she saw the kicked puppy look on his face.
“But Yuuki-kun doesn’t play the guitar like Hikaru does.”
Hikaru didn’t say anything, but his eyes went wide, waiting for her to finish her sentence.
“Hikaru’s guitar makes my heart go all doki-doki.”
-------
“How come I don’t ever hear you play in any of your songs?” she asked him out of the blue one day.
It took a while before he finally answered. “You listen to our songs?” a mischievous smile surfaced on his face.
“Don’t change the subject!” she hit him lightly on the arm.
“Maybe because I’m not good enough?”
“That’s nonsense!”
“Why don’t you play in yours then?” he challenged, which earned him another punch from A~chan.
“You know that’s not our thing. And I don’t play,” she retorted.
“I could teach you.”
The smile she gave him in return was blinding.
-------
“Play me a song?” he requested of her.
She frowned. “But I’m not good.”
He picked up the guitar from its stand and positioned it in her hands. “I’m tired of hearing myself play all the time,” he smiled playfully. “Play. One of my songs, please. Master Yaotome commands you to,” he puffed out his chest in a cheap imitation of an emperor.
“Narcissist.”
“You love this narcissist,” he countered, eyes lingered on her pouty face for a while.
She huffed. “But you’re doing the dishes after this,” she stuck her tongue out at him before beginning to strum a familiar tune.
When she’s done, he clapped like she did the first time she heard him play.
“Play me another one?”
