Wow, wonderful pictures, I can only imagine how amazing that trip was for you! I can't wait to hear what else you have to say. :)
Also, the guy I'm seeing speaks Korean (he's double-majoring in neuroscience and Asian languages) and I think it sounds really cool...I thought about taking it but it wouldn't fit into my schedule.
Wow, Alex has got a full plate! I picked up a Korean Phrase book, but even the romanization was really difficult. I know it's so ridiculous, but for some reason I was secretly hoping I'd get there and be able to magically speak the language. haha, I was definately wrong about that!
oh wow, dawn. i've read this at least 3 times. i'm so glad you got to go- it must have been heartbreaking seeing all those babies and making the connection that you were once in the same place that they are now. was it strange for your dad? what did daniel think? can't wait to read about your visit to busan.
also, i completely agree with this statement: "It's easy to forget that other countries have historys that go back thousands and thousands of years. I believe Americans have the uncanny ability to think that we are the only country in the world, despite what we see on T.V. and read in Newspapers." travel is so important to me, i know it is a huge privilege (since it is so expensive for one thing), but i don't think that a lot of people value it as much as they could and i know that i would save money for travelling over other things if i ever have to make those choices (like over a car, house with more bedrooms, etc...) i love this quote by maya angelou: Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.
oh, and yes, I agree with you and love that quote as well. It's beautiful. I was guilty of the same thing before i went to korea, I never really thought about other countries before. I'm so grateful to have gone on this trip-I'll never forget it!
Daniel didn't go to SWS with me, my dad wanted it to just be a "family thing" but I honestly think he just thought his girlfriend would be offended if daniel and my dad and myself went and deb and eric had to stay home. Miss Kang even asked me why I didn't bring my boyfriend. Oh well, he went with me to see my birthplace. :)
My dad's never really been comfortable around babies lol, he stayed out of the room and snapped pictures. I think he was embarassed to have me read the report about him and my mom's sexual history-hell, I was embarassed myself! No really, I was very grateful that he brought me there and let me see it all.
Welcome home! You were missed but what an experience! I know what you mean about other countries and the history that goes back WAY before the US. That's only one thing I object to what we're doing in Iraq. By trying to impose our "values" on another culture the more we lessen them. Anyhoo.... I'm happy you're back and I hope to talk to you soon. I'm glad you were able to go and I hope you found what you were looking for.
