A/N: It's been a long time... but I'm back :) I've talked a lot with Alyce, and I'm really thankful for what she's done. I've learned a lot from everything that's happened. I'm not entirely sure what will happen after this, but for now, this is enough for me. This fic is my journey.
Day Three: Tense
Ryosuke woke up in the morning on the third day with a stinging backache from sleeping on the floor for two nights in a row, but he reminded himself that he had to get used to it. There was no way he was going to take the bed from Chinen in his current state.
As soon as he got up, he went over to Chinen’s bedside to check his friend’s temperature. He didn’t seem much cooler, but at least the younger boy seemed to be peacefully fast asleep. Ryosuke sighed. Please get well soon, Chinen…
Gently, he brushed away the matted bangs that had draped over Chinen’s eyes, and, for a moment, Ryosuke was overcome with an impulsive desire to kiss the younger boy’s forehead in his unsuspecting sleep. He lowered his gaze, but the sight of Chinen’s pale pink lips, delicately parted as to allow his soft breaths to pass between, was even more alluring, despite his guilty conscience. Ryosuke’s forcibly tore his eyes away from the temptations, shaking his head to remind himself that regaining Chinen’s friendship was what he needed to work towards, and as a friend, he had no right to be thinking of Chinen so… strangely.
Sucking in a deep breath to regain his self-control, Ryosuke turned his attention back to the sleeping figure beside him. I shouldn’t wake him… He told himself, But what would Chinen need first thing in the morning? He hesitated for a brief moment before deciding, A nice, warm breakfast would be good for him to wake up to, ne? Ryosuke smiled and nodded to himself, content by his own wise choice.
Before he left the room, Ryosuke suddenly remembered he also ought to prepare fresh clothes for Chinen for when he woke up. Praying Chinen would be feeling well enough to change on his own today, Ryosuke made sure to leave a new change of clothes for Chinen on his bedside table. Ryosuke frowned, finding himself unable to help Chinen any further, but he just really, really wasn’t sure what would happen to himself if he did.
Closing the door gently behind him, Ryosuke headed over to the kitchen to begin putting together a breakfast. I wonder what I should make… he pondered. Opening the refrigerator, he smiled as he noted Yuto had remembered to supply them with the thin dough skins he needed to make Chinen’s favorite food. And I remember there was some minced pork in the freezer when I looked yesterday… Ryosuke smiled, realizing everything had clearly already been planned out ahead of time for them. Which means, there should also be… cabbage and chives, and garlic too!
Pulling out all the ingredients he would need, and then some, Ryosuke was prepared to make the best gyoza Chinen had ever eaten.
Once he had cut up the vegetables, lightly salted the meat, and prepared the various cooking oils and condiments, Ryosuke carefully wrapped each dumpling by hand, making sure to not let any of the filling slip out. He wanted everything to be perfect.
Once he had finally finished all the preparations, Ryosuke decided to check up on Chinen for just a second, and maybe wake him up to let him know his breakfast was going to be ready soon.
With a light skip in his step and a bright smile on his face from a sense of accomplishment, Ryosuke felt excitement from the prospect of seeing Chinen’s reaction to his cooking his favorite food. As he put his hand on the doorknob, he sighed in contentment, and without a second thought, pushed open the bedroom door…
And there he saw,
Chinen’s pale, smooth skin, practically glowing, in the gentle rays of morning sunlight that were seeping through the closed blinds,
his pure, milky legs that made Ryosuke’s heart pound upon the sight,
his well-formed abs that seemed to contrast so beautifully with his childishly cute face,
his bare chest that Ryosuke could practically feel the sensation of his hands running across,
his expression, confused, as he only now began to realize that Ryosuke was standing right in front of him, and he…
He was completely naked.
“W-What are you doing in here!?” Chinen seemed to finally snap out of his shock to demand an answer, trying desperately to cover himself with the clothes he had been holding in his hands.
Ryosuke could already feel the familiar pink warmth coloring his cheeks as he immediately turned around and buried his face into his forearm, effectively covering his eyes. “I’m sorry!” he shouted, his voice muffled by his sleeve. “I just came in here to wake you up! I hadn’t expected you to be out of bed already, let alone changing!”
“You couldn’t at least knocked first!” Chinen snapped, pulling his shorts on and his shirt over his head as quickly as he could. Once he was again fully-clothed, he sighed.
“You can turn around now, Ryosuke.”
Ryosuke complied, but as soon as he had turned, he bowed, making sure to avoid Chinen’s glare as he repeated, “I’m really sorry!”
Chinen sighed, ignoring his apology. “At least we’re both guys… I just… don’t like to be surprised.”
Ryosuke nodded meekly. “I’m glad you’re feeling well enough to move around now, though,” He tried to sound as cheerful as he could manage. “Your temperature didn’t seem much cooler this morning when I checked, though. I think it would be better if you could still stay in bed… if you wouldn’t mind, of course,” he added quickly.
In reply, Chinen sniffed, sitting himself down on the edge of the bed. “You said you came in here to wake me up? Well, I’m up now. So you’re done here, right? You can go away.”
“I… I-I mean, I made…”
“You made a mistake or something?” Chinen raised an eyebrow, suspicious at Ryosuke’s stuttering.
Ryosuke laughed dryly, “Well, I hope not…”
“Whatever you made, you should go eat then, Ryosuke,” Chinen cut in suddenly, his gaze turning soft as he looked back over at his friend. “You shouldn’t skip breakfast,” he murmured.
“I… I know,” Ryosuke tried to smile back. But I made it for you… he wished he could just blurt out, but he was too scared, too nervous. What would Chinen say? He wasn’t used to eating gyoza in the morning? Nothing could compare to his mother’s own gyoza? Or would he just yell at him for treating him like baby again? Ryosuke was too scared to find out.
“I would be happy if you had any leftover soup from yesterday, maybe?” Chinen smiled sheepishly. “If you could just reheat that for me, like maybe just throw it in the microwave for a minute, that would be good enough. I’d be really grateful,” he noted, his voice turning soft and his timid eyes averting Ryosuke’s surprised gaze.
“S-Sure,” Ryosuke blushed, seeing Chinen act so shyly towards him, it was an unfamiliar feeling, like Chinen had become even more… cute… than he was normally. Not that he normally thought Chinen was cute. Not in a serious manner, at least. Right?
Shaking the thought from his mind, Ryosuke hastily asked, “Are you sure you don’t want anything more? I mean, you haven’t had a proper meal in a while…”
“No, I’m sure,” Chinen nodded. “I don’t want to be a burden on you. Even if I am sick, I’m not a baby, after all,” he smiled gently.
His older friend could only smile back happily; it was as if all of the complaining and arguing that had gone on between them had faded away into their own private little inside joke.
Ryosuke could ask for nothing more.
