A/N: It's been a long time... but I'm back :) I've talked a lot with Alyce, and I'm really thankful for what she's done. I've learned a lot from everything that's happened. I'm not entirely sure what will happen after this, but for now, this is enough for me. This fic is my journey.
Day Four: Accidents and Mistakes
After the third day had passed with little more than gentle smiles and insistence on Ryosuke’s part for Chinen to eat a little more and lie in bed and rest a little longer, Chinen actually felt… better.
When he woke up on the fourth morning, Chinen stretched his arms widely and took in a deep breath, testing how far he could move his body. But to his surprise, everything felt… normal. It was unbelievable.
But if I’m better already… Ryosuke will go back to ignoring me and refuse to take care of me… Chinen pouted, looking down at the curled up Ryosuke who was still sleeping on the floor beside his bed. It’s not right for me to lie and take advantage of his kindness… but this is the only way Ryosuke will be nice to me and treat me like his friend again… his friendship… that’s just what I want the most…
Making his decision, Chinen quickly dove back under his covers and waited patiently for Ryosuke to wake up.
He didn’t have to wait long.
“Ne, Chinen…” Ryosuke’s soft voice called out.
His head hidden underneath the covers, Chinen stifled his giggles as Ryosuke hands gently explored his sides and tickled his body. Trying his best to keep his body still, Chinen let out a soft moan, as if telling Ryosuke his body was still too sore to move so quickly.
“Ah! I’m sorry!” Ryosuke immediately drew back his hands, scared of what pain he had caused Chinen now. Hesitantly, he drew back the covers to unbury Chinen’s face, but his movements were careful now, as to not disturb Chinen’s supposedly aching body. “I thought you would have gotten a little better now, but if you’re not, I’m really sorry!” The panic was evident in his voice.
Chinen couldn’t help but smile, “I’m… okay… Ryosuke,” he murmured. Slowly, he began to sit up, and Ryosuke immediately bent down to help support him.
“Here, let me,” he insisted, bringing Chinen’s legs over the side of the bed so that his friend could sit on the edge beside him. Ryosuke wrapped Chinen’s left arm around his own shoulders to allow the younger boy to lean on his body for support. His other hand supported Chinen’s waist to prevent him from falling backwards.
“You okay?” he whispered softly into Chinen’s ear.
The gentle breath of air tickled Chinen, but he again held back his smile as he nodded back shyly, his eyes avoiding Ryosuke’s worried gaze.
“We’re sitting so… so close,” Chinen noted softly, a wave of pink blush tingeing his cheeks.
“Yeah, I guess… we are…” Ryosuke nodded sheepishly, now his turn to avert Chinen’s shining eyes. “I mean, I just don’t want you to… to fall,” he added, trying to explain himself.
But I have already fallen… fallen for you…
Chinen desperately pushed the absurd thought from his mind. Tilting his head up to look at the older boy, whose gaze was now turned toward the far side of the room, Chinen vied to recapture his attention.
“Ryosuke?” he asked suddenly.
“Hmm?” His friend immediately reacted, turning his head back towards him, but in the split second just as he did, maybe it was because they were sitting so close, maybe it was because Chinen had tilted his head upwards in his effort to meet Ryosuke’s eyes, but somehow, just somehow, their lips… just… collided.
As soon as Chinen realized what was happened, his eyes widened and he could hear his heart thundering in his ears. His cheeks were now glowing red, and he mind swirled with questions.
But to his surprise, Ryosuke didn’t pull away.
A similar expression of shock and confusion shone from his friend’s eyes, but Chinen just wanted to block all the doubt out of his mind.
And so, he closed his eyes.
Before long, Ryosuke did the same. But unfortunately, Chinen knew his unexpected bliss could only last for so long before reality crashed upon them. Unwillingly, he pulled away. As if by instinct, as soon as he had opened his eyes to see Ryosuke sitting there, beside him, he touched his fingers to his lips, longing to feel the softness that had been there mere seconds before.
Chinen couldn’t find any words to speak; his eyes only blinked as his mind drew a blank. From their close distance, Chinen could tell Ryosuke was feeling just as fazed as he was. It seemed as if his cheeks had turned pink too, but it might’ve just been the glow from the sunlight outside the window. That’s exactly what it is… There’s no way… no way that Ryosuke is feeling… the way I’m feeling… Chinen told himself.
“W-What was that?” Ryosuke asked suddenly, breaking the silence.
“Shouldn’t I be the one to ask y-you?” Chinen murmured quietly, his eyes still wide in disbelief.
“I-I mean, it was… an accident…” Ryosuke defended hopelessly.
Chinen’s gaze fell, but not due to disbelief, as Ryosuke assumed, but because he finally understood. His heart clenched. I’m just an… an accident…
Realizing it was no use to try and make excuses, Ryosuke buried his face into his hands in defeat. “Why do I keep on doing this…” he muttered, his voice soft, but pained. “I keep hurting you, I keep on doing these strange things to you, but I really don’t mean to, I promise…” he mumbled.
“I-I believe you,” Chinen answered softly, struggling to find the voice to speak. “It’s okay, you didn’t hurt me, I’ll forgive you, don’t worry,” he whispered, trying his best to smile encouragingly at his friend. “Everyone makes mistakes, right?”
So that’s what I am… a mistake. Ryosuke bit his lip.

For the rest of the day, Ryosuke did whatever he could to avoid Chinen in the bedroom. He checked in periodically, knocking first, to make sure he got the boy any food he wanted or any help he needed, but he did it all without looking Chinen in the eye even once. He was afraid that if he did, something strange would happen between them again, and that was exactly what he wanted to avoid.
But when he went into the bedroom for the final time, just before he was about to go to sleep, Chinen made his final timid request.
Night had already fallen, and the only light in the room came from the pale moonlight that streamed through the windows. In this darkness, Chinen’s voice softly whispered.
“Ne, Ryosuke, we’ve been so apart lately…” he began. Ryosuke could feel the shyness in his voice; he knew something strange was about to happen. Closing his eyes, he could only listen dreadfully as Chinen continued. “Do you think maybe… maybe it would help me feel better if you… slept with me tonight?”
Ryosuke tensed upon hearing his words. No way… There’s no way I’ll let myself sleep with you…
Fearing the silence that followed, Chinen tried to laugh sheepishly. “Not in that way, of course! But I mean, just lay here, by my side? I dunno, maybe it’d be more comforting for me… maybe?” He winced, realizing how awkward his request sounded. But to his great surprise, Ryosuke actually murmured back, “Okay.”
“You don’t have to if it makes you uncomfortable, since we’re both guys and all…”
“It’s okay, Chinen,” Ryosuke smiled back gently. “I’ll sleep with you.”
Ryosuke couldn’t deny the fact that he was actually becoming excited by the idea, nervous at the thought, but his heart was already beginning to pound and his body was heating up as he spoke.
Chinen did his best to hide the red flush that had brushed across his cheeks as Ryosuke slowly lay down beside him on the bed, under the covers.
Ryosuke couldn’t even believe this was happening. He couldn’t believe he and Chinen were lying on the same bed together, sharing warmth under the same bedcovers.
“Ne, Chinen,” he whispered softly, but Chinen had already fallen asleep. His lips had parted ever so slightly as they always did when he slept, and Ryosuke could feel his own lips trembling at the sight. But then, Chinen snuggled closer to him. A foreign feeling of weakness swept across Ryosuke’s body.
“Ryo-chan… is so warm…” Chinen murmured softly in his sleep, wrapping his arms around Ryosuke’s vulnerable waist.
Ryosuke bit his lip, yearning to know exactly what Chinen could be dreaming about. He could hardly contain himself; he could hardly resist the temptation to capture Chinen’s lips in what would even be their second kiss. Shyly, Ryosuke turned to look down at the younger boy who was holding onto him so tightly. “Chii.. chan…” he whispered softly, and he couldn’t help but smile amusedly at the cuteness of his friend’s old childhood nickname. Using his last reserves of courage, Ryosuke hugged the younger boy gently and kissed his forehead, as he wondered helplessly, Chinen… why are you doing this to me?
