I can't wait to see what we'll come up with!! ^_^

“YATTA!” Juri jumped into air, pumping his fists in triumph while laughing victoriously.

Taiga merely slumped down in his seat and crossed his arms, clearly not amused.

“I finally won!” Juri shouted at the top of his lungs, unable to contain his excitement.

Taiga scoffed, “Keyword: finally,” he pouted. “I always beat you at this game, what happened?” he sighed melodramatically.

“I guess I just got better, ne?” Juri grinned.

Taiga rolled his eyes, but failed to suppress his slight smile. “Then how about one last rematch? To prove whether or not you just got lucky,” he challenged.

“You’re on!” Juri accepted, reaching for his controller to restart the game when suddenly…

The screen turned black.

Not only the screen, but the lights went out as well. A crackling of thunder signaled the ferocity of the storm that they hadn’t even noticed had been brewing outside. It was Saturday night, and Juri had invited Taiga over to his house to play some video games in hopes of passing the time, but now… blackout.

“W-What just happened?” Juri asked slowly once reality sank in and he realized the power had gone out. The answer to his question seemed evident, but still, he couldn’t help but ask.

“The storm outside probably knocked down a tree or something, and brought down a power line with it,” Taiga answered warily, stating the obvious that neither of them wished to accept.

Juri groaned. “Great. What do we do now?” Furrowing his brow worriedly, he decided, “Let’s go ask my mom about how you’re going to get home with all the power out.”

In the pitch blackness, he felt around in Taiga’s general direction to grab onto his friend’s hand. Gently pulling him up to his feet, Juri cautiously attempted to lead him to the door. Navigating blindly, fingers intertwined.

“Juri…” Taiga’s heart fluttered softly at the unexpected warmth of his friend’s hand. Taking a breath to attempt to calm his nerves, Taiga timidly tightened his hold on Juri’s hand, and allowed himself to be led on, through the darkness. Hidden from sight, Taiga didn’t even notice that his friend’s cheeks had also tinged pink.

Once they had finally cleared the path and made it out into the hallway, Juri called out, “Mom?”

“Juri!” His mother rushed over, with a candle in hand. “You both are all right?” she asked anxiously.

Juri answered, “Yes, we’re fine, but we were wondering, how will Taiga make it home with the power out?”

His mother sighed softly, turning to her son’s friend. “Taiga, I think you may have to stay here overnight, dear. It’s too dark outside without any of the streetlights on, and I don’t want your mom to have to drive blindly through the darkness to pick you up.”

Taiga tried to smile reassuringly, “It’s okay, Mrs. Tanaka, I don’t mind.”

She smiled weakly back, “The only thing is, we don’t have a guest room for you to sleep in.”

“But you can share my room with me; you can take my bed, I’ll just pull out my sleeping bag and sleep on the floor.” Juri offered at once, giving Taiga’s hand a light squeeze in assurance. Taiga forced himself to turn away so that Juri wouldn’t notice his reddened complexion, illuminated dimly by the faint glow of the single candle in his mother’s hand.

“Well, if you both wouldn’t mind, of course,” Juri’s mother added kindly.

Juri glanced hopefully over at his friend. To his relief, Taiga shook his head, “No, I don’t mind. I’ll just go call my mom then, to tell her not to worry. Thank you for letting me stay here overnight, Mrs. Tanaka.” He bowed gratefully.

Juri’s mother smiled again, reminding them to be careful walking around in the dark, before wishing them a good night and leaving to go check on the rest of the family.

Once the light of the candle faded away in the distance, Taiga squeezed Juri’s palm softly. “Ne, Juri, could you lead me back to your room?” He smiled shyly, an unseen warmth invading his cheeks. “I want to go look for my cell phone so I can go call my mom.”

“Sure, of course,” Juri nodded back, the action swallowed by the darkness. “Just… Don’t let go of my hand, okay?”

“I won’t,” Taiga promised, his chest tightening. I would never let you go… Juri…

Reaching out his free hand blindly in the direction from which he believed they came, Juri grabbed onto the doorknob to his room and slowly swung the door open, careful to make sure Taiga had first moved out of the way.

“Be careful, Juri,” Taiga breathed softly.

Juri nodded, again forgetting that Taiga wouldn’t be able to see. But as soon as he stepped inside, Juri himself let go of Taiga’s hand in order to start feeling around to see where Taiga’s phone could be.

“I think I left it on the floor by your bed,” Taiga whispered. There was really no need for him to lower his voice, but in the stillness of the night… it didn’t feel right to disturb the peace.

Hearing Taiga’s words, Juri instinctively swiveled around towards his bed, but in the blackness, in his rush to turn around, he immediately stumbled backward. Reaching out frantically to try to grab onto something to keep his balance, he merely pulled Taiga down along with him as he fell.

Luckily, Juri landed on his back onto his bed, cushioning his fall. Taiga’s face buried into his chest, causing Juri to wince a little from the impact, but he couldn’t help himself from also blushing slightly in the process.

Confusion and surprise swirled in Taiga’s mind, still shaken by the fall, but most of all, Taiga worried that Juri could feel his heart pounding through his chest, now pressed against his friend’s stomach. He couldn’t believe that he was actually lying on top of Juri, their bodies so close, even touching.

“Tai…ga?” Juri mumbled softly, as he slowly reached out in the darkness to pat Taiga’s head gently.

Taiga’s body tensed, realizing he had to pull away now. But he couldn’t resist resting his head on Juri’s chest for one lingering second before jerking back and whispering, “S-Sorry.”

Juri merely laughed softly as he adjusted himself to a proper sitting position. “I think I should be the one apologizing, for stumbling. Are you all right? Not hurt, are you?” A gentle concern touched his voice, making Taiga’s heart skip a beat.

“N-No, are you?”

Juri shrugged, “I’m fine.”

For a quiet moment, they merely sat across from each other on the bed in the shadowed night. Seconds faded into minutes, and soon it began to feel like eternities had passed in the silence that stretched between them.

Without realizing, Taiga’s hand slowly, ever slowly, began to grope around in the blackness. Fumbling blindly, until his fingers brushed against Juri’s cheek.

“Tai-”

“Shh…” Taiga closed his eyes, putting a slender finger to Juri’s lips. Touching their foreheads together, Taiga breathed in deeply, feeling their breaths collide; his lips were so close, yet so far.

In the darkness, Juri closed his eyes as well; placing a shaking hand on Taiga’s cheek, his thumb traced Taiga’s soft lips.

“Juri…” his friend breathed beneath his touch.

The sound of Taiga’s phone ringing pulled them apart.

Taiga suppressed a sigh as he forced himself to climb off the bed, following his ears to find his phone buried under his bag on the floor nearby. His cheeks still burning with embarrassment, Taiga tried to calm the rampant thumping in his chest before reading the caller ID that had lit up the phone’s screen.

“O-Oh, it’s my mom,” he mumbled.

Juri sighed, not as inconspicuously, and lay back down on his bed, waiting for Taiga to make his call.

“Hi, mom? Yes, I’m still at Juri’s house, but the lights went out… We don’t have any power at home either? Aw… We lost power a just a little while ago, but I’m still safe. I’m with Juri right now… Oh, I was wondering about that, do you think it would be okay if I just stayed here overnight? I think it would be safest for all of us right now, because I don’t want you to have to drive through the storm in the dark… Okay! So you’ll let me stay? Thanks, mom! Yes, I’ll see you tomorrow then… Good night…”

Once Taiga had hung up the phone, he sighed, remembering what had almost happened just minutes before. For a second there… I thought Juri and I were… were about to… He sighed again.

Using the dim light of his phone to guide himself back over to the bed where Juri now lay, he realized Juri had seemingly fallen asleep already. Gently, he touched his hand to Juri’s face, drawing soft circles in his cheeks.

All of a sudden, Juri grabbed onto his hand, apparently still awake, and pulled Taiga onto the bed beside him, so that he lay with his back to Juri. From behind, Juri wrapped his arms around Taiga’s thin body, hugging the boy whose mind was still frozen in shock.

“Juri…?”

The younger boy did not answer. He merely pulled his friend even closer, until their bodies touched and his head rested on the back of Taiga’s shoulder.

“Just stay here… like this…” Juri murmured, nuzzling his friend gently.

Taiga’s heart pounded against his chest, his cheeks flooded a deep pink.

“B-But, Juri-”

Juri cut him off by shaking his head fervently, tightening his hug even still.

Taiga smiled softly, loosening Juri’s grip around his waist so that he could turn around and face his friend. “Isn’t this better?” Taiga whispered, gently brushing away the loose bangs that had fallen over Juri’s eyes before placing his arms around Juri as well.

“T-Taiga,” Juri smiled, running his fingers lovingly through Taiga’s hair.

And for the second time that night, his friend leaned in, but this time, it wasn’t their foreheads that touched.

Instead, it was their lips.
