I'll be studying a lot, but after that I will have a short break from school, so more writing! Chapter Two: lost
With a heavy sigh, Yasui collapsed in the seat beside Hagiya, leaning on his friend’s body for support.
“Are you okay?” Hagiya asked gently, blinking his eyes in pleasant surprise. He paused, before putting an arm around Yasui’s shoulders.
Is this… okay? Will he push me away?
Yasui now knew about Hagiya’s secret, but still, Haigya hesitated. Yasui hadn’t truly given him a straight answer to his confession. He didn’t really know for sure whether Yasui returned his feelings.
What are we… friends? Or lovers?
Hagiya was too afraid to ask. He breathed in slowly, trying desperately to calm his pulsating heart. But it was no use. His heart only fluttered once more as Yasui pressed himself closer to Hagiya’s chest. His cheeks dyed a vivid red.
Yasui nodded, closing his eyes, enveloped by the warmth of Hagiya’s body. “Just tired,” he mumbled, knowing Hagiya wouldn’t force him to explain any more. Hagiya smiled softly, realizing Yasui had still come to him for comfort, even after his confession. Even though he didn’t know what their relationship was anymore. Yasui could simply rest, here in Hagiya’s arms, and that would be comfort enough. Hagiya would still be here for him, just like he always promised.
What am I to you?
It was as if nothing had changed between them. As if the lines between friendship and love were blurring in his mind, indistinct and inexplicable. In the darkness, behind closed eyes, Yasui smiled softly, feeling Hagiya’s gentle fingers running ripples through his hair. He didn’t even notice Hagiya was trying so hard to contain the erratic beating in his heart.
A light kiss on his forehead, a whispered comfort in his ear.
Yasui sank into Hagiya’s arms, knowing he belonged.
Didn’t he?
It was still a bit strange to imagine himself being together with his friend, pretending as if all his past feelings for Juri didn’t ever exist. He had secretly loved Juri for so long and still, Juri never found out. It was time for Yasui to move on. He hadn’t forgotten Juri. They were still friends, but Yasui knew he had to keep telling himself, he had given up.
He had Hagiya now. And he couldn’t ask for anything more.
“I’m sorry… again,” he breathed out in a whisper, not needing to open his eyes.
“Sorry for what?” Hagiya asked softly.
“For not loving you back,” Yasui murmured. “Before, I mean.” He opened his eyes, looking up to meet Hagiya’s gentle gaze. “Holding on… for so long… it must’ve been painful,” he sighed, not realizing he was referring to his own pain.
Hagiya shook his head in reply, rocking his friend’s body in his arms ever so slightly. “I didn’t mind. I could still spend time with you, by your side.”
“I’m still sorry…” Yasui mumbled, feeling his cheeks reddening from the warmth of embarrassment. He wasn’t used to Hagiya saying these kinds of words to him. At least, not when he knew…
Hagiya was serious.
Hagiya meant every word he said.
Hagiya truly loved him.
Yasui didn’t want to admit it, but it still felt a bit strange.
Sitting up in his seat, Yasui turned to face Hagiya, searching his friend’s gaze for some sort of indication of comfort that this was okay. That they could be more than friends. That crossing the lines was supposed to feel strange at first. That everything would be all right.
Slowly, Hagiya reached up and placed his hand gently on Yasui’s cheek. I love you… Yasui could almost hear him whisper. His chest tightened at Hagiya’s touch.
“I…”
Yasui held his breath, waiting to hear those three words.
But instead, Hagiya touched his hand to Yasui’s chin, his fingers trembling as he traced the outline of Yasui’s lips.
“Can we… kiss?”
And for a second, Yasui’s mind couldn’t even process his friend’s words. He lowered his gaze, but then lifted it once more to look into Hagiya’s eyes.
Why didn’t he say yes?
Yasui didn’t know. But just as he parted his lips to answer, from the corner of his eye, Yasui saw a familiar figure approach behind Hagiya.
“Juri!” He instinctively grinned, pulling away from Hagiya. But immediately stopped himself, realizing something was wrong. His heart shouldn’t have skipped a beat to see Juri.
“Hey, Juri,” Hagiya smiled as he turned around to him. He wanted to be happy to see his friend, but something had changed with Yasui as soon as he saw Juri. He became happier… but why? No matter how hard Hagiya tried to comfort Yasui and allow him to rest, why did Juri manage to provide Yasui with so much energy just by walking towards him?
Hagiya sighed inwardly.
“Oh, hey, guys,” Juri answered quietly, his voice lowered. With a feeble smile, he sat down beside Hagiya.
“Is something wrong?” Yasui asked quietly, noting that Juri hadn’t come to sit with them at lunch for a while now. He had always been with Taiga. “Not that we wouldn’t like you to sit with us, but is Taiga not here today?” Yasui’s voice almost sounded hopeful.
Juri shook his head. “Nothing happened,” he murmured, looking down at his lunch impassively. “I just wanted to sit here with you guys,” Juri shrugged.
Hagiya tilted his head slightly in wonderment. He didn’t want to think Taiga did anything bad, but he knew he and Yasui were both thinking exactly that.
“Did Taiga-”
“So how are things going for you two?” Juri interrupted before the question could be asked. “It’s been a while since we’ve hung out.”
“Pretty good,” Yasui answered slowly, realizing Juri had ignored the question. He and Hagiya had yet to tell Juri about their relationship, but somehow, now didn’t seem like a good time to tell him. It would probably be better to change the subject. “I think I need a tutor in physics, though,” he groaned melodramatically.
“Physics?” Hagiya shook his head. “I can’t help you there, sorry,” he laughed lightly.
“Can you help me, Juri?” Yasui asked suddenly, not realizing he had spoken before the words had left his lips.
“Sure? I’m not sure if I can help much, but I can try,” Juri smiled sheepishly. “Physics isn’t my strongest subject, though. I actually had a tutor for myself before, too…” Juri’s words drifted off, memories returning to his mind, of when Taiga had attempted to tutor him.
“And here you just use Newton’s second law again, and then solve for the acceleration,” Taiga murmured, leaning in closer towards Juri so that he could point to the problem that he was referring to on Juri’s paper. He almost pulled back, feeling his fingers overlapping with Juri’s by accident, but instead merely smiled softly. “S-Sorry,” Taiga bit his lip, trying to resist the upward curving of his lips.
“Sorry?” Juri had laughed lightly. “Should I apologize whenever I hold your hand then?”
“N-No,” Taiga murmured. “I wasn’t apologizing for that,” he whispered, cupping his hand to Juri’s cheek.
Juri looked at him curiously. “What were you apologizing for then?”
Taiga couldn’t help it. He grinned shamelessly. “For being unable to control myself from doing this,” he answered simply, before leaning forward and pressing a light kiss to Juri’s cheek.
“I’m sorry, Juri,” Taiga had grinned.
“Juri?”
With a hollow sigh, Juri closed away the memories.

For the first time in a while, Taiga was alone again. It had felt like it had been so long, the time he had spent alone before. But despite how terrible he had felt about loneliness then, it seemed as if being alone now was still even worse.
Going to the roof alone. Expecting Juri to come. It was much worse now.
The sky overhead was a harsh deep blue tracked with filmy clouds like cobwebs. The sun was bright but seemed to give no warmth. Taiga breathed in deeply, unable to escape the feeling of being suffocated.
He hadn’t thought Juri would just leave him like this. But to be honest, it was Taiga who had sent Juri away in the first place. Telling him he had to have time to think things through. But was that what he really needed?
Time?
