Hm. Is being from Belarus really any different from having ancestors in the Appalachians? It sounds a lot alike, right down to not speaking the language.
Well, the people where my family comes from in the Appalachians supposedly speak English, but most people who aren't from there can't really understand them until they've spent a few weeks listening. Just as they can't understand people from other parts of the country, of course ... I can interpret, though.
I went to Belarus on a school trip many years ago now. The vodka was in full flow back then, too, but I put it down mainly to the whole imminent collapse of USSR thing.
