I’ll Always Want You Near
Dean still remembers the first time he saw blood in Sam’s mouth.
Sam came to him and pointed toward his lips, his bottom baby tooth at an angle. “It won’t come out,” he said, poking at it with his finger.
“Hang on.” Dean went into the motel bathroom and found a washcloth that looked mostly clean. “Be still, okay?” He pinched his fingers around the washcloth, covered Sam’s tooth, and pulled. It didn’t come out at first, so he twisted and yanked, until he felt it separate with a pop.
Blood pooled in his mouth and Sam’s eyes got wide, but he didn’t cry. “C’mon,” Dean said, leading Sam to the bed and turning on a G.I. Joe cartoon. He wiped the blood out and stuck the washcloth into the gap in Sam’s gums. “Leave it there, okay?”
Sam nodded, holding the dingy washcloth and pressing down.
Now blood pools in Sam’s mouth again, and Dean holds onto his brother, arms tightening around his body, squeezing, crying, praying, “Sammy.”
