Rock climbing would be more fun if I weren't absolutely terrified of heights.

That being said, I've decided that since my university has a climbing wall in the gym, I'm going to make an effort to climb more in an attempt to overcome this fear. We'll see how it goes.

Climbing walls can definitely be just as challenging as real rocks, depending. Iirc, there are some spots that take you pretty high up that simulate to a degree the feeling of being so high up.

Good luck with it, I hope you can feel a little less scared when you go, not that I blame you for being afraid of heights.

I'm terrified of heights and I used to indoor rockclimb all the time back in highschool.

Okay, I'm not so much afraid of the height so much as I am falling from them to my horrible, horrible death. The fact that you're wearing a harness and don't die when you fall does help.

The harness helped me get myself up higher than I probably would have otherwise...but eventually the "Oh god oh god what if I fall oh god I'm so high up vertigo!" kicked in and I had to give up. I don't know why, it just does.

It does help to actually fall. Or hang from the harness and learn that you can trust it. You don't even have to let go, just let the harness take your weight so you believe that it will hold you. You have to build up the trust.

That's more trusting the belayer than the harness. :P It doesn't really help the vertigo, though.
