Damn. I never realised how sad the word 'supposed' is until I read this ficlet. :-(

nly that everything doesn't include what she WANTS, just… just what she's supposed to want.

...

Before she starts her new life next to the man she's supposed to-no, the man she loves.

Wah!

Silly girl. Silly Harry. But still, it's the only way we can explain the epilogue, isn't it? Stupid silly feelings of 'responsibility' towards those Weasleys, giving the red-heads their love interests on a platter, no effort required.

Arrgh.

I never quite realised until now, either, how useful the Mirror of Erised would actually be in determining one's true desire, cutting through any silly notions of obligation or self sacrifice. What a pity that each vision is private! Otherwise there'd always be a chance that Ron could observe Hermione's desire and see that it didn't include him. (But would jealous!Ron let her go anyway?)

Just as the fact that this might as well be their last time together. So ... was there a first time? Other times? In that tent ( ... )

I have this theory: I do not /believe/ nothing happened in that tent (let's assume that, as the book were in Harry's POV, he just decided not to tell us about it).

Taking that into consideration, I think the whole "I love her like a sister" thing was just Harry being his stupid, noble self. He couldn't lose Ron's friendship and he couldn't endanger Hermione's friendship with Ron and thus the life of the Golden Trio too. So, he decided to step back.

So, assuming something did happen (and I know it did ;D), Hermione is kind of hurt when Harry kind of, sort of pulls back from her to give room to Ron. Believing what they had was a comfort-between-friends thing, she lets it go and focuses on keeping Harry alive. Once that done, her main priority would be, as it is shown to us in the book, Harry's happiness.

Being the selfless person she is, it's most likely Hermione sacrificed her own happiness in lieu of Harry's. (Of course, silly little girl doesn't know he loves her too, such a shame.)

But that's just me theorizing book 7 =)

See, that's the core of it. Harry and Hermione truly love each other, as measured by the ultimate metric of such - they are willing to forego their own happiness if that's what's necessary to make the other happy.

I accept that. But it's as you say - they don't know that the other is similarly being self-sacrificingWhat we need is a sequel to this story, some way for Harry to discover that Ron *isn't* Hermione's first choice, and likewise for Hermione to discern that Harry's monster died when the Harrycrux did ('cause my own personal book 6 theory is that the 'chest monster' that had a life of its own inside Harry was - of course! - the fragment of Voldemort's soul that, indeed, had an independent existence within Harry's scar ( ... )

Harmonian minds think alike. A good author on ff.net wrote something similar:

Really, to me, that Harry and Hermione went through this process is virtually canon. In my head, the epilogue at the station showed both their marriages on the brink of breakdown before they divorced the Weasley's and eventually found each other. There's more than one excellent story utilising this idea!

I will check out the story, just because you recommended it as I usually avoid the HP section of ff.net (I prefer lurking on LJ and Portkey.org).

It is possible, because as I said, it's so like Hermione and Harry to sacrifice eir themselves for each other and their friends.

The epilogue showed all you just said, and also how JKR didn't know how to handle H&Hr relationship without ruining the illusion she wanted us to believe (you know, OBHWF), so she completely stomped over it in lieu of their "happy" couples.

/There's more than one excellent story utilising this idea!/

I know! =D I've seen some good one on Portkey.org!

I love this. You show so much in a few span of words. Love the idea of Hermione being awaken to her feelings by the Mirror of Erised

Lovely little scene. I love how you got into Hermione's head; I can hear her in your words. Nice work! Would have wanted this to be longer, though ^_^
