Letters to Cities

Nov 23, 2010 16:32

Dear New York,

I am coming to see you this weekend. Thanks for opening up a cheap room at the Jane for me at nearly the last minute!

Love,
Ann

Dear San Francisco,

I am coming to see you, too, next month, and bringing Andy. Please don't rain the entire week.

Love,
Ann

I need to drag B to SF, I think he'll love it.

SF's a pretty lovable city, I think.

Andy had never been before this May, and that trip only really gave us an afternoon in the city. We'll have a bit more time to ourselves this go-round. Tempted to stay here and pretend we're in Tokyo, but that might just be confusing:

I can tell you already! I stayed there last June and, obvs, liked it enough to return.

I like the retro-ness of the place and the ship's cabin-style rooms (good use made of very tiny spaces - not for the claustrophobic or, if you ask me, more than one person, though some are set up with bunk beds for 2).

The only real downside is the incomplete transition away from having SRO residents - basically means that parts of the building are still on the crusty side, and any encounter with a resident is just plain awkward. "Hi! I'm a bargain-seeking hipster who can probably afford to pay for a real hotel! You must be the guy whose room kinda smells and is probably getting pressured on a daily basis to move the hell out!"

I kept the notepad from the room. It has a drawing of a naked lady on it and the paper is pink and very high-quality.

I lived around the corner from it for a few years until recently and every time I walked Miss Traddles by there I wondered what was really going on inside. This was before it became a hotel, when it was just a sinister mysterious building. What do they charge for a room? And yeah, that thing with the SRO residents must be odd as hell.
