a-gnostic is literally no knowledge, it means not sure if there is a god
a-theist is literally no god, it means don't believe in God at all
interestingly christians were called athiests in ancient rome, because they worshiped only one God and not many.
Jesus claims to be (the jewish) God, and to uniquely reveal (the jewish) God, (jesus was the jewish messiah, so he didn't really reject judaism).
I think his claims should be taken on their own merits, not on whether it means rejecting other religions or interpretations.
I agree 100% we can all learn to expand our beliefs and worldviews past those we were born with. for some that means rejecting god/religion but for many others who grow up with no knowledge of God it means moving past what they were born with and investigating for themselves the claims of those who say the speak for God.
The only way forward is to read/think for yourself!http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+1&version=
