This week made it to the top 5 of the worst week in my life.Actually it becomes no 1, now that I think about it.
On Monday, my friend from another hospital told me that someone from my hospital gave the wrong medication to his patient.Patient then went to my friend's hospital to change it.Okay, if it's simple med then I probably won't feel bad BUT it turns out as a life-dependent drug and I'm in charge of it.
This is the second time it happens some more.To think that the wrong drug manage to slip past 2 checkpoints consist of pharmacists and pharmacy assistants is mind-boggling.I mean, are these people checking properly what they are giving to patient??Luckily the patient didn't file an official report to my department. It becomes a hush-hush thing between me and my friend.
In the first case though, the patient went to report to his doctor and the doctor talked to the head of department in my friend's hospital. He has to answer it, the poor thing.I'm sure he hates me now (secretly) for giving him so much trouble.
Another major event was last Thursday where I was told there's no medication to give to patient as soon as I step into pharmacy for work. The patient's hospital sent over his medication so he can collect it at my hospital (SPUB system). For some reason, the medication was MISSING from the cupboard where I kept it.
I turned the whole pharmacy upside down looking for it.And it's nowhere in sight.
So now what?
I thought,"Okay, let me ask whether the patient's hospital was willing to send over some more to me.Then everything should be ok,right?"
It just got worse.
The hospital can't send any more since they have limited amount of that med and they already send over enough quota for that patient's med to me.Apparently also the medication cost a bomb so they can't just simply lend it to anyone.
At that moment of my life, I had my first panic attack ever.My head hurts and I can't breathe properly. My mind screams,"What am I gonna do?" over and over.
I do managed to gain some control over it after a minute or so.
It is so f**king ridiculous how the med managed to disappear since no other patient was on it either. He's the only patient using it in my hospital. And I'm pretty sure it was in the cupboard when I checked last two weeks. Not pretty sure, IT WAS THERE SURELY.
So how did it managed to vanish? There's few possibilities:
- Someone gave the wrong drug to patient without checking properly
- Someone gave the right drug but to the wrong patient-another patient who's not supposed to take it in my hospital
- Someone gave the right drug to the right patient but the wrong amount-they gave everything from my cupboard
I was hoping for the third option.
I tried calling few other hospitals to borrow it but all said no since they also don't have any stock to spare.Send out SOS message to all pharmacist friends I know to borrow the med but no positive response.Patient will come again on Monday.
So now, I'm officially screwed with no way out.I feel like crying but that won't really solve anything. Will seppuku solve it?
My only salvation is that GANTZ showing in theatres now.Let me enjoy these last few days of the week without any trouble in mind before facing the consequences next week.
