I had a friend like that. I found myself buying food for her children because I couldn't just let them live on what she fed them. Once that started though, she'd just call me and tell me she was broke and out of food and wait for me to offer. I had to separate myself from her. One of her kids still comes to me, just to talk, bum a meal, and get a hug. Breaks my heart. One of them thinks that I abandoned her mom - like I was her dad or something. It's a real shame.
This kind of personality is insidious. It is in our good nature to want to give people the benefit of the doubt. It sounds like she's demonstrated who she is, though, and your realization is valid, even if it took time.
