Sword of Wisdom

I've been reading Ithell Colquhoun's Sword of Wisdom: MacGregor Mathers and the Golden Dawn. I have really enjoyed it, much more so than Howe's Magicians of the Golden Dawn. I think this is largely because I find Colquhoun herself quite charming (I was saddened to read that she met her end in a house fire in 1988). I have a few quibbles with ( Read more... )

I don't know, but find it interesting that so many GD lines have such an ambiguous relationship to Crowley. They know he's where the Fire Power and Energy of Magick are, but they are simulateneosuly terrifed.

Got to go to the gutter to claim the Gold.

Yeah, I found myself repeatedly musing that for it to be a book about MacGregor Mathers, Sword of Wisdom sure spent alot of time talking about Crowley.

To be fair, it talks a lot about Yeats as well, and of course, all the other characters associated with the Golden Dawn, but Crowley simply looms large over everyone else.
