AFAIK, the hope chest wasn't a widely spread tradition here in the US. It may have had some regional popularity, but nationwide, I don't think it ever really "took".

My only real exposure is from literature, most all of it written before 1950 I suspect.

And yes, sundries have gotten cheaper here as well, mainly due to China.

I know about hope chests. IIRC one of my earliest flames had a hope chest. That's... a while back. I don't know of any currently.

Sundries may well be less expensive. I sometimes wonder about quality of same as a consequence.
