As Harry raised his hand to knock on the huge front door of Hogwarts, two strange things happened at the same time. The stone-carved animals above the door twisted their heads to face the three intruders, coloured sparks coming from their mouths. Tom yelped and grabbed onto Helga's skirts, but Harry barely noticed.

He was staring at his own hand, or rather at what was left of his own hand. His middle finger was gone. Part of his wrist was missing, too. And his pinky was fading.

His attention was pulled back to the present (whenever that was) as the stone lion spoke:

‘Welcome strangers,’ it said.

Helga whispered, ‘But that's Godric's voice.’

‘Only a few may be permitted entry,’ the lion continued.

Tom whimpered.

‘It's only been charmed, sweetheart,’ Helga soothed, stroking the boy's hair. She wasn't to know that her words made no sense to him.

The stone eagle spoke next, stretching its wings out behind itself. ‘No Squibs,’ it pronounced.

‘No, Rowena!’ Helga exclaimed. ‘We discussed this!’

Then the snake uncurled itself and, eyeing his gradually disappearing knees, Harry suddenly knew what it was about to hiss.

‘No Muggle-borns!’

Panicked, Helga turned to Harry, ‘What have you done, lad? We have to go back! They didn't stop him. I wasn't there and they didn't stop him!’

Her panic was nothing to young Tom's, though. He had noticed what was happening to Harry. As he screamed, his uncontrolled, juvenile magic caused wood to splinter from the door, grass to shrivel and - behind them - students screamed as objects spontaneously combusted all over the grounds.

The three carvings turned impassive faces to them and pronounced in unison: ‘One Pure and two Halves. You may pass.’

The huge wooden doors swung open and Harry took hold of Tom by the flailing elbows and started to drag him up the steps.

‘We can't go in!’ Helga began to panic. “You have to take me back! Now!’

‘I can't get back,’ Harry panted, ‘until I know when now is!’ He wasn't absolutely sure he would be able to remember how to work the Time-Turner even with that knowledge.

Instinctively, he headed for the Great Hall. Three tables, of course, instead of four. Three rather small tables. Empty. It wasn't a meal time. A lot of the students had been outside. Harry was having trouble even working out what time of day it was, let alone what point in history.

He shoved Tom onto a bench. The screaming and the explosions were making it difficult to think.

‘ ’S'okay,’ he muttered at the boy.

Helga sat beside Tom and put her arms around him. She patted his back and let him cry onto her bosom.

‘He's not used to other people using magic,’ Harry explained.

Helga raised an eyebrow in a manner that was far too similar to Dumbledore's mannerism for Harry. ‘Maybe he's not used to people dissolving in front of him, either.’

Harry looked down his body. Not too bad, yet.

‘Maybe you'd better explain to me how to work this -’

‘Time-Turner,’ Harry supplied.

‘Because you might be in no fit state.’

Harry sat down on the other side of Tom and, as the boy quieted, Harry explained first how to use the Time-Turner, then gave Helga his theory as to why he was disappearing.

‘My mother was Muggle-born,’ he said. ‘If she doesn't go to, or didn't go to, or whatever, Hogwarts, then she wouldn't have met my father.’

‘Sweet Merlin!’ came an amused cry from behind them. It was in a voice Harry recognised.

The three time travellers turned. A beautiful, dark-haired boy stood in the doorway. He was tall and slender. His head was twisted away from them, though as he shouted back, ‘James! Peter! You have to see this!’

Harry stood up. It was almost worth the mess he'd made of everything so far. He was seeing Sirius alive again. James? He was going to see his father too?

‘Look at that!’ Sirius cried, delighted. ‘He looks just like you, doesn't he?’

Harry stared at his father as he walked into his room. He was about the same age as Harry. Peter, scrawny and eager, jumped into the room and laughed. Harry looked round. Three Marauders. Where was Lupin? His stomach clenched. No Squibs, no Muggle-borns. There wasn't much chance of this place letting in Creatures then. No Lupin.

James looked back at Harry. He sneered. Harry's heart broke.

‘Not much like me. I don't hang around with women and children. And I've got all my fingers.’ Then he leered at Sirius and Harry felt himself overbalancing as James added: ‘Luckily for you.’

Tom screamed again. Harry was laid flat out on the floor, one whole leg missing. Peter laughed loudly. James and Sirius ignored it all, leaning in to each other, wrapping their arms around each other, smirking and then coming together in a deep, familiar kiss.
