yah? You better have a receipt to support your claim, monsieur; a word given will not work as substitute proof of payment.

Philosophically, occassional abstention can be beneficial...

If you know, like the voluntary rigours Ayyappa devottees inflicts on self before heading to Sabarimala...

umm, would I look really stupid asking what kinda rigours they inflict on themselves? (are we talking of people who wear all black and go without footwear for a while?)

Yep. But unfortunately no many know the philosophical reasons. Almost all mix it with religious fervour. I think abstention is there for a long time almost in all cultures. But it becomes easy if you mix it with religion so that a common (unintelligent) man will follow it with blind faith successfully. Its something like "you dont know what fruit you are eating, nor do you know how it tastes, but anyway the fruit is in your stomach and given you energy."

No non-veg, no shaving, no smoking, no booze, and get this: no sex.

My dad, president of the local Ayappa temple management committee numerous times, has been going to the Sabarimala every year for heaven knows how long.

It's good to be an atheist. ;)
