1. I'd personally recommend Debian, but then I have to say that ;)

2. I tend to use vsftpd these days. The configuration is pretty simple.

3. If you install samba, you should be able to access files shared on the Linux box from your windows machine.

Do I need all 5 DVD iso images?? Seems excessive for a Linux install. lol.

No.. you just need the "netinst" image (about 150M I think), which contains the installer and the base system. Everything else gets downloaded from the 'net when you need it.

I fwd'd my question to a buddy on LJ who i thought might be able to help, but he said he wasn't permitted to comment directly, so i'm relaying it in.

His input was to suggest that you use something that is well-used by new users, so that you're more likely to find the questions (and answers) online when you have them. His take on this was "... Debian is out, but Fedora or Ubuntu are in."

That said, if you can find answers to your questions easily (like via the other commenter who knows Debian), that kind of support would easily trump being able to find answers via online fora. :)
