Colonel Jack O’Neill waited, hands in his pockets, at the base of the ramp, as the MALP rolled up the ramp and disappeared through the wormhole. After a few moments of forced patience, he turned to look over his should at General Hammond in the control room. All they needed was the all clear from the MALP feed before his team and SG-6 were allowed through the Gate.

Hammond looked up from the feed and nodded once. Excitement curled Jack’s lip up into a smile and he rocked forward on the balls of his feet and then bounced back to center. It never failed to send his heart racing every time he stepped through the Gate.

“SG-1, SG-6, we’re clear for your mission,” Hammond spoke into the intercom.

Jack pulled his cap down over his head, giving the brim a brief bend before he reached for his weapon. He turned to Lieutenant Colonel Henderson. “You heard the man, take the lead,” Jack ordered.

Henderson’s eyes almost bugged out of his head at the order to be lead team. “Thank you, Sir,” he replied and turned to relay the order to his team.

“The novelty finally wearing off?” Carter asked as she moved to his side.

He shook his head. “Nah, just figured Henderson’s team is probably tired of always following behind. P3X-761’s safe enough. They’ll be fine for a few seconds ‘til we come through,” Jack offered with a shrug.

Carter smiled at him and he felt the familiar and ever-frustrating tug whenever she turned that smile in his direction.

Lt. Col. Henderson took the lead, striding up the ramp with eager steps, his team falling into formation behind him, with his 2IC taking up the rear. One by one, all four of them disappeared through the wormhole.

His team stood at the base of the ramp, waiting their turn. Daniel was fully engrossed in the notes in his hand, taken from the MALP’s first trip through the Gate. Teal’c stood ready, hands tucked behind his back. And Carter took point, always the eager beaver - no, he really wasn’t going there.

“Go on. You’ve given them enough of a head start. Don’t want them getting too used to leading,” Jack told her.

She smirked and started up the ramp. Teal’c gave him a brief nod and followed a few steps behind Carter.

“Daniel,” Jack called out when the linguist didn’t move.

“Hm,” Daniel muttered and looked up from his notes. He flushed a little as he realized his team was leaving him behind.

“Sorry Jack, just reviewing…” he trailed off as he held up the notes in his hand, and then followed after Teal’c.

Jack gave Hammond a quick salute before turning to the ramp and taking a step forward. The lights in the Gate room flickered for a second, and then the wormhole disappeared.

Jack stood there, not believing what his eyes were telling him. Teal’c stood a step away from where the wormhole had been, Daniel a step behind him, and Carter was just gone.

Jack knew he wasn’t helping matters, but he couldn’t stop pacing, stopping from time to time to breathe over Harriman’s shoulder, barking out the same questions, wanting to know just what in the hell was going on.

“Jack,” Hammond’s voice stopped Jack’s pacing short. He turned on his heel, spinning around to face the General as he appeared in the control room, shadowed by an airman.

“Have you heard anything?” Jack asked, though he doubted Hammond had been able to find out anything more than the nothing Harriman had.

“Not exactly,” Hammond answered with a frown and a quick shake of his head. “Jack, I need you to come with me,” he added.

“No, Sir. I need to stay here. The Gate could open at any moment. Carter…” Jack trailed off as he cast a glance over at the screens that still displayed screen after screen of 1s and 0s. Harriman and his staff had been unable to regain control of the computers.

Hammond gestured to the airman standing behind him, “Airman Cadden has been ordered to alert us immediately if the status of Captain Carter and SG-6 changes. You need to come with me. There’s something you need to hear.”

Jack shook his head.

“It wasn’t a request, Colonel O’Neill,” Hammond spoke, an annoyed look crossing his face at Jack’s reaction.

Jack cast one last look at Harriman furiously typing on the keyboard to no avail. “All right,” he said with a sigh. As he followed after Hammond he stopped at the airman’s side. “You come get me the minute anything changes,” Jack ordered him and was relieved the airman immediately nodded.

Satisfied that he would be kept in the loop, he reluctantly followed General Hammond out of the control room and through the SGC. Hammond remained silent as they walked down the halls, and Jack didn’t have the energy to question where they were going, or what was so important that Jack had to hear it himself.

Hammond pulled open a door to one of the many briefing rooms and motioned for Jack to go ahead. Jack gave him a brief nod before he walked inside. There were several older model computers and equipment inside, and Daniel sat in front of them, listening to the static-laced chatter.

“What’s going on?” Jack asked as Daniel looked at him for a moment, offered him a tight smile, before turning his attention back to the choppy conversation.

“Have a seat Jack,” General Hammond said as he gestured to the empty chair next to Daniel. Jack sat down in the chair, and the conversation flowed around him.

“What are we listening to? I thought we weren’t able to get in contact with anyone?”

“Ssh,” Daniel cut him off, and Jack focused on the conversation that Daniel was so intently listening to.

The words machines, Judgment Day, and war caught Jack’s attention, and he turned in his chair to focus further on the conversation. Jack silently listened as a kid talked about the end of the world, about machines taking over and hunting down humans, and finally of hope, of knowledge that the damage had been done, but that there could be victory.

He listened as other members of the Armed Forces chimed in with their thoughts, most expressing their doubt over the kid’s statements. But as far-fetched as it seemed, as much as Jack didn’t want to accept the possibility that machines were taking over the world, his gut was telling him the kid was telling the truth. Fear tightened his throat as he thought of Henderson, so excited to be given the opportunity to lead. His thoughts moved to Carter. He didn’t even know if she’d made it through before the wormhole had disengaged. The idea that she was dead made it hard to breathe. But this kid, he knew about what was going on, knew what was coming, and maybe, just maybe, he could help them figure out a way to bring Carter and SG-6 home.

He reached out, hovering over the button for a second, as he glanced at Hammond. The General gave him a nod and Jack pressed down on the button to speak.

“This is Colonel Jack O’Neill of the United States Air Force, based out of the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. What’s your name, kid?” Jack identified himself.

“John, sir. John Connor,” came the reply.

Jack took a deep breath, well aware that other military personnel were about to question his sanity. “Well John Connor, it looks like we’re going to need your help.”
