I've been thinking of learning this stuff myself - it's been a while since I did any coding but I'm enthusiastic and have a looot of free time on my hands. Do you have any advice on how to start teaching myself to do the thing?

Also, believe it or not, Google has been invaluable when it came to learning how to do things, and most of the stuff I learned I gleaned from a Google search or few. Also, when it comes to more advanced stuff, MobileRead Forums and their wiki are pretty much the go-to places. MobileRead is a great community (although I've only lurked there), and people are generally quick to offer help if someone needs it. The threads especially offer a lot of great insight on how to solve even the tiniest problems.
