Title: A Study In Rose
Series: Book of the Hermit, Story Four
Fandom: Pokémon
Characters/Pairings: Bill, Lanette, OCs
Genre: Mystery
Rating: PG
Summary: A corpse in a garden, an upset bush of roses, and what looks like a solved case. Except it isn’t.
Excerpt:

For most people, the term “partner” would be a relief; by definition, it indicates a person with whom one shares responsibilities - an equal. Don’t misunderstand. My partner and I are most certainly equals. It’s just that I have the simultaneous pleasure and misfortune to be partnered to a man with the imagination and intellectual brilliance of Nikola Tesla at the peak of his career… coupled with the eccentricity and psychological stability of Nikola Tesla during his love affair with a pidove.

A Study In Rose
I TRIED. \o/

Seriously, I wrote most of this after I saw my first episode of Elementary. Actually, I've been wanting to write something like this for a long time because I see Bill and Lanette as having a sort of Holmes-Watson relationship (in that Bill is an eccentric genius potential something-addict who everyone consults for some reason while Lanette is his ever-faithful minder equal and partner-in-crime), but I just don't think I did this as much justice as I'd like. Probably because I chose to write this from Lanette's point of view, and while I'm familiar enough with Lanette (mostly because she's practically an OC because thanks, canon), I don't think I got her voice down as well as I'd hoped.

Ah well. It's out there. And it's the fourth gen fic in the series.

Halcyon
GO FUCKING READ IT.

I swear. I have no idea where this even came from, but I wrote it in two days and holy eff am I proud of it. There's some wonky bits, sure, and I deliberately left out a lot of information. But that idea?

Secret: I wrote Book of the Hermit in part to test out new ideas for fics. Y'know, kinda like how Cartoon Network had those shows that were full of shorts that eventually became their own cartoons. Book is one of those shows. And I think, if I wasn't overloaded with work, Halcyon would be the Powerpuff Girls of Book of the Hermit. Just the entire premise behind it! Legendaries end the world, and a laboratory complex full of people tries to ride it out via putting themselves in suspended animation in an underground laboratory. Egotistical but well-meaning researcher gets rejected for AI duty and ends up stuck in complete isolation for nine years except for the voice of the researcher who was accepted by the computer and uploaded into the system. Egotistical researcher gets pissed off and spends the rest of the decade plotting to destroy half the complex.

And then someone from the desolate wasteland above ground manages to break in, setting off a long chain of events.

It's like 2001: A Space Odyssey meets Portal meets the Matrix, only if the computer was actually the good guy in all of this.

And then! And then I do have an explanation for how Bill gets out of the system, but because of that, I can't decide if I would write about the events leading up to this fic or events after or both and make it another one-shot series or asdfghjkl;

Needless to say, I had fun writing this. A lot of fun.

Also! There are fun geekery notes that go with this one because I'm crazy!

1. The moves described in this fic? The original Marshall Gambit. You can read the annotation I used here.

2. Aurel Pendula's name comes from Aurea Pendula, aka the golden weeping ash, a breed of ash tree. Why ash? Because Yggdrasil, the world tree of Norse mythology, was an ash tree. And Professor Pendula was corrupted. Think about that for a sec. I'll wait.
2a. I didn't want to call him Professor Ash for obvious reasons.

3. Halcyon comes from a mythical kingfisher of Greek mythology said to calm storms for certain months to lay its eggs. It's also a symbol of peace and prosperity.
3a. It is not a reference to HAL 9000 -- although, yeah, I was aware of that when I chose the name.

4. Bill's name is significant too, although this isn't much of a point because it's not like I wouldn't have chosen him for the position either way (given that this is part of a Bill-centered one-shot series and all).

5. While chess has a lot of significance in the fic in general, one of the reasons why it was chosen to be the game Bill and Lanette were playing was as a reference to the Red and White Queen AIs of the Silent Hill film franchise.
5a. The other reasons? It's meant to represent a balance between Bill and Lanette.
5b. Also, Bill is right about cheating against the computer, and this is chess we're talking about.
5c. And there's probably others, but it's already past 5 AM here. I should be in bed. Y'know, sleeping instead of on DW.

6. All of Bill's comments about Lanette's skills are references to his dialogue in HGSS and his e-mail in RSE. Note that I never made it clear how involved he was in creating Halcyon, and Lanette implies that he had more of a hand than he lets on.

7. For those of you who might find the italicized parts too vague, that's a message Bill is sending out whenever someone enters the Eon complex. So the one that starts off with the line about nine years was the message triggered by Pendula. The one that starts off with the line about ten years, however...

And that's about all I've got right now. Please feel free to ask if I'm too vague at bits, though~!
