Spring break is here. Huzzah! Too bad it’s raining and cold.

It’s a really sad feeling when you’re the last person that believes in yourself. I went to my lesson yesterday and my viola teacher told me that I might as well give up on trying to go to another school other than UT because I’m not good enough to get in anywhere else, and even if I did ( Read more... )

Nia's super-smart! She's just not a math person. It's pretty stupid that the school system forces EVERYONE to take pre-calculus; most people won't (needn't, shouldn't) go on to calculus. The idiotic, imbecilic, asinine, puerile, backward, half-witted, irrational, fatuous, duncical, comatose, hebetudinous directors of the school system simply want their schools to look "advanced" and "exemplary", and they just end up making them suck even more. Ok, I'm done ranting (if I missed any good synonyms for idiotic, feel free to chime in).

I know I've told you this before, but dirt poor people are better off than middle-class people when it comes to paying for college. You're going to qualify for a LOT of scholarships and a LOT of financial aid, so don't worry and audition everywhere you want to, regardless of cost of attendance. Middle-class people don't qualify for financial aid but are still too poor to pay for private colleges (average cost per year for a private college: $40,000). Don't listen to Dr. Rylands when it comes to stuff like

no, that's the thing. i'm NOT DIRT POOR!!! i'm not rich, but i'm not poverty stricken either! Dr Rylands just assumes that i am because my family doesn't own the city. She really doesn't know a thing about my financial situation. she just assumes that i'm another poor negro living off of food stamps just because my mom is a teacher. she doesn't even know what my dad does. It just pissed me off because she doesn't know the first thing about my situation and because the thinks she's this omniscient violin god that she knows everything when she doesn't.

Sorry, Nia, I know you're not dirt poor at all. BUT! Private colleges cost a TON, the financial aid officers know this, and they dole out a TON in financial aid. Ok - straight off the Princeton Review - At Johns Hopkins 45% of the freshmen receive aid, and the average freshman total gift aid is $22,893. And that's primarily for people who aren't black and don't play the viola. You know, i'm not a $$$ guru, but Dr. Rylands doesn't know what she is talking about! Audition where you want to.
