The idea of a nation is flawed, it is outmoded, and it is archaic. The notion of a tribe is foolish, it is dangeous, it is self-destructive and self-defeating. A nation is a tribe

::Applauds the people are people sentiment:: Unfortunately though, I think the tendency toward "us and them" thought is ingrained in human nature, which I'd guess is why the concept of nation and nationality exist at all. When you think about it, it's silly -- these and most other designations are arbitrary -- but it seems that people are always trying to organize themselves into groups based on them. As long as there is group membership (us) and exclusion from the group (them), no one has to recognize that "they" are just humans too -- isn't that how war is rationalized, along with a number of other unsavory practices? It's sad really, if people would just stop categorizing for a minute and see that everyone is simply a human, I think a whole lot of problems would be solved.
Ideally, it would be grand if government was relegated to a maintenance of order-type role, but I'm not sure it's realistic. Of course, that's why I'm a moderate/centrist rather than an über-Libertarian like you. ;)
*Nods* It's precisely as you say, yes it is. *Nods with more vigour* But, sadly, Humans do indeed want to have their groups and cliques and suchlike.
And xD I'm still an extreme, it's just gone to the other end of the spectrum now. I used to be very Marxist, left-wing, and an approver of the Socialist system... *Shudders* :p
I agree, wholeheartedly. However, for any kind of individual based society to work, the VAST majority of individuals have to be increddibly moral, self governing people. And truthfully, with all the people living off government cheques and the like, we're a long way from that.
You're right though. Something like that would be a huge struggle without the general populace being very moral and controlled. If too many people gave in to criminal impulses there would probably be anarchy...
Yeah, right. If you knew anything about my political philosophy, you'd know I'm as far from Communism as it gets:
"freedom for every individual man to make his own way, unburdened and unharassed by issues not of his own making, free to make his own choices, his own victories, his own wealth, his own mistakes."
Unless you were being sarcastic/satiritical/ironic/sardonic/etc. in which case meh.
