He can’t remember the first time, just the fear that’s always been with him. It hovers just above his skin, humming that old tune that’s familiar and terrifying all at once, a lullaby that taught him to be afraid. He does remember the last time he thought he could fix it, rage burning through his body and so certain that this was the end, only for it to end in humiliation and ignominy, just like everything else.
Every time he opens brand new eyes to the world, he comes back with less. Like there’s something that he’s left down below, a cover charge for entry, paid for in Kenny. The world is a little farther away each time, a little bit harder to join.
With every new body it takes him some fraction of a moment more to reach out and touch the person curled in beside him. Each sleepy sigh is a little harder to hear, and the ache in his chest when Butters opens his eyes and smiles, like Kenny isn’t fading away, is a little stronger and further away, all at once.
The song along his skin is the same, but it feels like it’s getting louder.
