[Having been curiously fascinated with the letter system after corresponding with Rolf, Jimmy had picked up Lillian's letter, but it took a few days for him to even reply - not because he had been busy, but because it had taken that long for him to think up a suitable response. The handwriting this time is neat, if still strong; he had obviously put more time and effort into it.]

Was it a demon?

I can't say whether or not killing them is the best course of action or not, but I think, just because life is precious, that it was necessary. If you hadn't, you would have died instead, and that's hardly a solution, miss!!!

Besides, I hardly think that a person who takes the time to consider whether or not someone who threatened her life would be missed is in any danger of becoming too cold any time soon.

Please cheer up!

[Lillian had checked late evening on the 17th to see if the letter had vanished like the others had but had found no reply. The thought of some prankster stealing it and mocking her secret feelings about what had happened bothered but she thought she'd left things vague enough that she could spin a believable lie about its contents should anyone at school find it and ask her about it. Lillian returned once each night after curfew to see if any replied had manifested. On the third night, the 20th, Lillian finds Jimmy's reply, in a much calmer state of mind than when written hers. Her handwriting is similar to the first though there is a vague uncertain quality to it, as if it were written by a timid hand.]

Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate them very much. I feel much better now.

[The words stop here; there is a smiley face drawn here, similar to the one Jimmy had included in his.]

It was, indeed, a demon. Are you familiar with them by chance?

I am glad to have been of aid to a lady such as yourself. It's simply unacceptable that you should feel down about something so inescapable. I fought a few demons myself (but they weren't like yours - rather, they seemed like little blobs of Great Grammy's lime pudding, terrible smell and moldy and all). If your encounter was like mine, then there wasn't much choice, was there? You were simply doing what was needed.

Think of it this way: If you hadn't survived, no one would survive long enough to try to make sure the fighting stops peacefully in the future.

[The handwriting looks a little more confident and less hesitant this time.]

You make a very good point. You're right; I only did what was necessary to survive. It's best to focus on the future, not worry about the past and what can't be changed. Again, thank you for your kindness.

[Letter breaks here, another smiley face is drawn, the pen strokes a little bolder, and the smile a fraction wider.]

Is your Great Grammy's lime pudding really that putrid? I hope no one was hurt.

Lillian
