I'm not a football fan at all but I really like Three Lions. I like its sentiment.

Were the papers really full of "England's going to lose" in 96? If so, what went wrong?

The original 3 Lions is easily the best football song of all time, even better than World In Motion (which is a much better song then 3 Lions but not as good a football song).

You are right it did capture the imagination at the time. God those were the days. I remember Euro 96 really well and listening to that song takes me back all those years.

And I seem to remember that 3 Lions wasn't actually the official England song for Euro 96 - wasn't there some awful song by Echo and the Bunnymen?
