I doubt this will happen in the U.S. as we have constitutional rights to freedom of speech (well the Constitution didn't stop the Patriot Act, so you never know...). As far as what's on the Internet and who can access it: the Internet is the greatest source of knowledge and misinformation in the same place. It's both extremely convenient and terribly annoying. And inquiring minds want to know how things work/look/behave/feel/are like and the Internet is a great place to do that. Once a teenager, it's probably safe to assume that naked people won't hurt anybody. Younger than that, there should be restrictions on a per-family basis and not controlled at the government level. Society has some nudity phobia which is unexplained and for no apparent reason at all; big deal it's anatomy. But I digress; I think it's better that some 13-year-old stays at home and watches porn at his computer than go out to a strip club. But whatever. I could be babbling as 11-hour flights make you a little batty :).

My issue isn't so much with the individual famiies controlling internet access, but with the enitre Chinese gov't doing it. And 13 year olds are not new to the idea of porn or naked people, humans are sexual creatures.
I think you make a lot of sense though, and I read your lj entires about your trip. I'm glad you had a good vacation!
PS you're not batty. :)
