I went home after picking up my daughter from school to check on the cats. They were fine and coexisting with the dogs under the house. I let my daughter take her favorite (the female) back into the house

Definitely the male doing the marking of territory - we've had several male cats and, unless you get them fixed at an early age, they piss on everything.
