You know, I had almost gotten the impression that the ETC had course-corrected a little bit. Guess I was wrong. :( I felt the same way you describe during my time there. Lots of crying at home. The way to do it is definitely spend a year to meet the people, then get the hell out of Dodge. ;/
i thought they had, but then they accepted almost 50 first years and now have 13 projects going on, 2 with teams of about 10 people and no where near enough faculty to advise anything
I always disagreed with the idea of doing a co-op during a stint at the ETC. If you're paying for the education of being there, you should get the education of being there. Otherwise, you're just working for some company anyway, and you can save many thousands of dollars by not giving it to the ETC.
On the other hand, I didn't have as rough of a time as many people apparently did/do. I'm sure that's largely because I did my own thing a lot, rather than committing myself fully to the project each semester. Three out of the four semesters, I really did fairly minimal work on the projects, scaled back scope a lot, and did my own research the rest of the time, or somehow made the project coincide with my research. I think more ETC students would be happier if they could do that, though I realize that's pretty much impossible when you've got more than just a few people trying it.
